4) Although an orchestra is a team that must perform together, an egalitarian pay structure (equity theory) would not help performance and motivation in this pay structure, which is more about competition and performance, than about equality. A tournament model applies nicely to this schedule because the hierarchical pay structure motivates the musicians to become better and ultimately become a principal player. The tournament model would encourage competition. Institutional theory would not apply to this pay structure because the orchestra’s hierarchical pay structure has various levels and differential that seems to be customized on musician’s performance. It seems to not be copied, but customized to fit whatever the orchestra’s objectives
