Oedipus the King is indeed the perfect model of a tragedy in the sense that it has all the elements of a great tragedy. Oedipus went through many tragedies throughout his reign trying to beat his own destiny that he was doomed to live and being able to change it. Human suffering, weakness and powerlessness to in trying to control one’s destiny. Many incidents in his life, the struggles he went through to the natural destinity that was occurring no matter how hard Oedipus tried to advoid it prove that King Oedipus is truly one of the perfect tragedies of all time.

Even though it may not seem a tragedy when he gets there but in the end it really is. Upon arriving at Thebes he comes across a monster like creature called a Sphinx who is asking everyone riddles. If the riddle was answered incorrectly then that person would be immediately eaten. Oedipus answered his riddle correctly causing the sphinx to die. When the sphinx died he was declared the new King because he just killed Laius. Once he was declared King he them married Jocasta who was King Laius widow who was also Oedipus mother. This came when king Oedipus started thinking about the prophets words. The more he thought the more he started to convince himself that it was Creon trying to replace him as the King. Jocasta then told Oedipus about the Oracle telling her and King Laius that Laius would be killed by his own son.
