In this book, one of Barbara’s friends named Gail was struggling to pay rent every month, then she decided to write a survey about Gail. Additionally, her roommate had not treated Gail fairly. Barbara stated ‘‘Gail is sharing a room in a well-known downtown flophouse for $250 a week. Her roommate, a male friend, has begun hitting on her, driving her nuts, but the rent would be impossible alone’’ (927). Renting an apartment is one of the biggest financial problems for most middle-class Americans. Unfortunately, Gail was a part of lacking house to live. The money that Gail makes is not enough to pay the whole rent by herself, so she has only one option to make it work. And that is sharing a room with a stranger guy. Because of money deficit, people like Gail have a small amount of chance to live without a roommate. There are good things and bad things living with a stranger roommate. The bad thing is that some roommates are lazy to clean up the room that they share. The good thing is that a roommate can help to pay half of rent money every month. The house rent that Barbara spent is about 400 dollars or more. She has to save a whole month of her paycheck, in order to pay off her rent. Middle-class life is tough.
