What Is Nathaniel Hawthorne's View Of Human Nature

Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the most influential and important writers in American history, is regarded as a landmark in American literature of 19th century as well as a founder of the American literature. Hawthorne created a series of American novelist and short-story that respond to the call of national characteristics of the times, which help him to consolidate a high status in American literary history. Hawthorne’s Romance, as a new literary form, has exerted a tremendous impact on Hawthorne contemporaries and critics from home and abroad, which strengthens his literary position. In most every book he wrote, he discussed evil in human nature. For example, Hawthorne’s short stories “The Birthmark” and “Young Goodman Brown” established the theme of human nature as extreme, where telling are the background to reveal character.
Hawthorne used setting as a means of reinforcing theme to relevant to the story of “The Birthmark” because Aylmer’s selfishness caused death of his wife when he tried to remove the birthmark which was on his wife’s cheek by using his scientific method, thus could completely eliminate his own shadow of …show more content…
As seen in “The Birthmark”, this story told the readers that everyone must learn to be satisfied with the existing state of affairs because the desires find nothing to feed. The desire will go on and on, which will not be satisfied as well. No one do need to pursue perfection without ignoring its original beauty. And “Young Goodman Brown” told the readers that everyone's life will experience a great impact on their own lives and bring everyone an inspiration, thinking, or even the changes of concept such as after returned from the forest, Goodman Brown was leaded to experience a night that would change his character forever. And the so-called devil or evil, in fact, exists in the life of human and do not need to guide the human also tend to "evil"
