• As a student I have some privileges that others do not have. For example, many restaurants, stores and public parks or museums offers discount rates for students. The fact that besides working full-time I am also a student granted me with greater consideration and tolerance from my bosses. I noticed that my co-workers who are part-timers get greater amounts of assignments than I do. Fact that I think may not be fair, but as white privileges on the reading I did not asked for them, they were given to me. However, I did always offer myself to help my coworkers or to finish what they are doing if they have to leave before I do. As a female is easier to get what you want, like or need. Starting from home, I noticed that as a female I always convinced my parents quicker than my brothers to do what I want. Seems like for some reason parents tend to believe more on the female siblings that on the males, even when they lie. Then as a student I think is easier for a female to approach a professor and openly say that you did not understand, whether a male student who tend to hesitate more because they do not want to be perceived as a “dumb”. Likewise, I realized that most professors regardless of their gender incline more towards to female students in regards of the “favorites “on class. Further than that, nowadays you can perfectly be either a working mom or a stay home one without any condemn, but as male if you decided to stay at home, then you better prepare for the disapprove and criticize. Mainly if you are a Hispanic male, it is a fact that gender roles for some culture are pretty straightforward, and for Hispanic culture males are expected to provide for the family, or fix the car or the yard while females are expected to cook and wash dishes. Another female privilege is the ability to participated in the same action as a male person but be considered blameless by default. I was myself exposed to all kind of people there. Most of my childhood friends were either killed or incarcerated before reaching their 20’s, and for most of my neighbors the fact that I was a high school student was a privilege that not many around there had. Reality was that even those who had the means to pay for an education decided not to pursue one. Now most of those same neighbors think that I am an arrogant or pretentious person, which I am totally not. I think I solely raised my living standards by taking advantage of education.
• Most of my family members considered that I am a privilege smart person with abilities that they do not have, but I think most of them have not seen the struggles I had to go through to be where I am today. The fact that I have a limited English and that I graduated with honors was not the result of being a smart person, but the result of effort, a lot of it and of being passionate about my profession.
