My success as a student and desire to gain a higher education at Virginia Tech is the result of a devastating spinal injury. During my sophomore year of high school, I fractured my fourth lumbar vertebrae and was placed into a full body, metal brace for nine months. After a series of MRIs and bone scans, my doctor discovered that my spine had experienced multiple microscopic fractures throughout my adolescent years. I spent two years in and out of the hospital constantly tearing ligaments, tendons, tissues, and practically every structure attempting to hold together my limp spine. Up until that point, I had no career goals, no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and the only thing I knew is that I had a passion for anatomy.
