Mirror self-recognition in the bottlenose dolphin:
A case of cognitive convergence
What was done?
An experiment was performed on two dolphins one was 13 years old male Bottlenose dolphin and other was 17 years old male bottle nose dolphin. This experiment was performed to see if there is any ability in dolphin to use the mirror to inspect any marked part of the body and to prove whether they have self- recognition ability in them or not.
How it was done?
Two dolphins were kept in the pool for long time and when the research was being done everything was video recorded and been judged and given score by people who were not aware of this research project to come to a decisive conclusion. This was two phase experiment which was done in same location,

This session was conducted in two connected pools, large and a small pool. Mirror was stationed near the mouth of connected smaller pool.
Subject one experiment:- 16 non-marked pre-feeding control sessions and during the post-feeding sessions consisting of 8 marked condition with the mirror sessions, 5 marked condition with a covered mirror or no mirror sessions, 7 unmarked condition with the mirror sessions, 9 unmarked condition with no mirror sessions, and 1 sham-mark condition with mirror session (Directly from the review article).
Subject two experiment:- 20 non-marked pre-feeding control sessions and during 11 post-feeding sessions consisting of the marked (or sham-marked) condition with the mirror, 5 marked (or sham-marked) conditions with a covered mirror or no mirror, and 4 unmarked (or no sham-mark) conditions with the mirror. Thus, 16 mark or sham-mark sessions were conducted in this phase (Directly from the research

What the result(s) or the outcome was (were)?
Outcome for Phase 1:- The animals spend more time engaging in to self directed behavior at reflective surface like walls when they are marked than they are early sham-marked late sham-marked. Also dolphins spent more time in mark-directed behaviors at reflective surface when they are marked and spent less time in sham-marked directed behavior when they are sham-marked.
Outcome for Phase 2:- The researcher’s didn’t came to any conclusion for this and had to do experiment with two different subjects, but they made 3 predictions:-
1. Dolphins should show no social behavior at the mirror.
2. Dolphin’s should spend more time at the mirror when marked than any other conditions like sham-marked or unmarked.- They confirmed this prediction when they did this part of experiment with second subject
3. Dolphins goes directly to the mirror when they are marked and if they didn’t left the session before self recognition period starts than when they are

Bottlenose Dolphin attacks on Harbour Porpoises Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) attacks have been responsible for 318 Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) deaths between 1991 and 2010. However, almost everything we know about Bottlenose Dolphin attacks comes from the necropsies of their victims; Harbour Porpoise, as very few attacks have been observed or even documented scientifically. In the UK there are two established populations of Bottlenose Dolphins; Cardigan Bay, Wales and the Moray Firth, Scotland. It is in these locations that Harbour Porpoises are found dead on the local shoreline with visible signs of Bottlenose Dolphin attack.…

The Peer Review Article that I chose is called, “Do dogs get the point? A review of dog- human communication ability” by Juliane Kaminski and Marie Nitzschner which was available online June 6, 2013. This Article approach to dog's communication ability basically uses a lot of research that has already been performed to prove their point that, “dogs forms of communication may be more specialized than was predicted by some and may be best explained as the result of a special adaptation of dogs to the specific activities humans have used them for” (Kaminski,Nitzshner pg.294). To prove their initial hypothesis they bring about various experiments performed from 1995 to as recent as 2012 to explain that dogs can understand human gestures when…

Dolphins have smooth, rubbery skin and they normally have some mixture of black, white, and gray. They have two flippers,on their sides, as well as a triangular fin on the back. Dolphin calves are born in the water after a period of one year for about 18 months.…

The second bowl contained water at 55ºF, the third bowl 45ºF, the fourth bowl at 65ºF, and the last bowl at 85ºF. Keeping these temperatures steady involved placing ice into the bowls 65ºF and lower and boiling or simmering water and adding it to the 85ºF bowl of water. After each day the temperature of each bowl of water was measured, kept steady and the behavior of the fish was recorded. The minnow fish were feed once each day and water changed every week but at the same temperatures.…

Scientific Validity of “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” Coral reefs are having a problem with pH levels and they are dying some places around the world right now, because of it. This is not only affecting the coral reefs, but the animals that live in them and survive with them. There is a Scientific Study called “Study links altered brain chemistry, behavioral impairments in fish exposed to elevated CO2” which discusses the behavior and neurological impairments of coral reef fish due to more CO2 and acidic levels of pH. More CO2 causes lower levels of pH and makes it more acidic and very dangerous for fish. Overall this is a poor scientific article, because it has only one good source…
