May 31, 2017 Minimum Wage Essay From working in a industry that starts usually at minimum wage I can relate to the movie, “ Minimum Wage.” Even though Minimum was created to set minimum living standards for men and women. It isn’t enough to live on in today’s world. I think people need too action because Barbara Ehrenreich experience.
Minimum wage will never be enough to live on by working brutal hours and not getting paid enough. In Barbara’s book Nickeled and Dimed she said, “ someone ought to do the old fashioned kind of writing, go out and live on minimum wage for themselves" (Ehrenreich1). I coul=d never see it happening, but as her journey went on she had to rely on herself to survive. She started

It was very tough for Barbra being treated unfairly and pushed to her limits. She was experiencing brutal physical work and got thirsty like any other person would, but she said “ there is no fluid or food item can touch a maids mouth, when she's working inside a house" (Ehrenreich82). Barbara had many instances where her boss's were putting making money over treating their employees right. As the book went on I started to realize how many times she moved based on how much money where in her paychecks. When it made me realize how unstable and hard life really is when you get paid minimum wage. " Something is wrong, very wrong, when a single person is in good health, a person who in addition possesses a working car, can barely support herself by the sweat of her brow." …show more content…
I am moving to London this summer to work for 6 weeks, and finding a place to rent for a reasonable price, is nearly impossible. The restaurant I will be working at is number 26th rated restaurant in the world and being small I imagine I will be working six days a week, with 12 hour days. I am not saying it is right for them to pay me such minimal money but I am doing it for the experience. Sometimes the things that you want, are willing to sacrifice pay in my opinion. I don't agree with paying people minimum wage that work just as hard as someone who makes one-hundred dollars an hour. " Paying your employees well is not only the right thing to do but it makes good business."(Jim SinegalCosco) I don’t cook for the money but I know for example when I got my first job making above minimum wage I came to work happier and left wanting to come back the next day. I felt more secure and didn't have to worry about working hard and just getting

Barbara Ehrenreich argues that those in the workforce of minimum wage face struggles that affect their life styles, however they fight back tooth and nail too overcome these situations. In chapter two of Nickel and Dimed Barbara declares that those who fall under the ethnicity of “white” have a much higher chance of obtaining a job compared to someone of color. While reading this chapter some struggles that minimum waged workers faced are: housing standards, being able to afford food and having to face harassment from either bosses and/or co – workers. Considering our world today a huge percentage of people truly is living on low wage salaries. Barbara Ehrienreich came up with the book Nickel and Dimed On (Not) Getting by in America in the most paradoxical way. She was in a French country-style place that offers $30 for lunch with Lewis Lepham. They were talking about the future articles that she may write for especially in the side of poverty. Considering that price of $30, that is not really the best price for lunch so that made her tell the editor that someone should do old fashioned journalisms and try it themselves.…

Most people in the middle and upper classes of American society believe that low wage workers are where they are due to multiple reasons, such as drug use, laziness, or other mistakes. This thought has been part of society for many years, and as a result there is often little pity, and little help for the poor. Minimum wage is a relatively new concept in the labour market. It was created with the idea that minimum wage will be a stepping stone into a better paying job in mind. As the years have gone by, minimum wage jobs have evolved from supporting teenagers and giving them the necessary experience in the work field to supporting families. It’s this change in dynamics that fuels the argument that minimum wage should increase to a living wage. What people fail to realize is that minimum wage exists for a reason and should it be increased; the positive impacts are outweighed by the negative impacts in the economy.…

With the minimum wage set at $7.25, an individual working full-time 52 weeks per year does not make enough to support themselves or even a family of two. The amount they make is below the Federal Poverty Line for a family of two. The government should raise minimum wage because then low-income families will gain benefits, the government will save money in public assistant programs (Short, 2014), and people will be able to buy more products in turn giving money to the economy again. There are a few reasons why the government should raise the minimum wage. Firstly, the government should raise the minimum wage so low-income families are able to support themselves and their household.…

Since 1938 the United States government came up with an idea called minimum wage. The reason why minimum wage jobs were made were for people in poverty to get a better job or to go back to school or kids so they could make money for school and other things. There was no sense in trying to control the madness of our large group, of fifty year olds to five year olds. It was a great day, the sun was out and the summer breeze was perfect. Our huge mob, a third of us high schoolers from Missouri and the rest elementary kids from a few miles down the highway in a lower income area, walked around taking in the downtown sites of Detroit. We had started by having a nice picnic in the park crowding around small tables to make our sandwiches and playing with the Frisbee. After packing up and catching all of the trash blowing around in the wind, we had the rest of the day to explore the shops and cool places scatter across the downtown area.…
