My Reflection On What I Learned In My Writing Class

Improved Essays
In high school, I excelled at writing, and my grades reflected that. However, throughout high school, writing became a routine thing for me. I would look at the prompt and begin writing. I was challenged many times but forgot why it was important to be challenged. To me, an academic learner is someone who challenges themselves in areas they already thought they knew about. Throughout this semester, I was forced to analyze why I was actually doing things and why I thought certain things. The commonplace book allowed me to reflect on what my main focus was on my works of writing and also how things can always relate back to each other, this probably being why one of tags I used a lot was reflection. The exercises and questions we answered on …show more content…
Sometimes I would wonder if things we did in class were really helping me, and it made me become uninterested. However, I can now say that those exercises are what helped me the most. I would question why we were reading things in the writing reference but now looking back at my post on my blogs, I realize that those meaningless exercises to me were what made me do so well on my papers. I forgot how important it was to do the smaller assignments, and how those would so greatly affect my ability to write a long paper. Looking back at my posts, I am able to see how well they helped me develop tools. On many of the posts I could have used the tag, focus, because all of them helped me to focus down my ideas and use the surrounding information I had to further develop my idea. However, I only included that tag on posts that I thought really provided me with critical tools. One of the post I tagged with this certain tag was the one about the organ sales essay. In this post I was asked to look at each of the paragraphs and come up with a mini outline for each one of them. This really helped me, and I wish I would have done this exercise in the beginning of the year because this technique of using an outline really helped me when writing a long or short paper. It helped me focus my ideas and organize my paper. A thing I found hard in all of my papers was focusing my ideas and not letting my supporting …show more content…
This was really important to me and something that I really liked. In our society today, the media is something that has a huge impact on us. One of the tags I used was media, I used this tag because this was something that we used in class that affected my writing. In most exercises we were looking at outside sources, one of those sources being the news. We focused on the news when it came to the North Dakota Pipeline. We looked at multiple news sites, and reflected on that. By responding to these articles, it helped me become aware of how biased websites can sometimes be. It helped me realize that when looking for outside sources I have to be careful on making sure I am paying close attention to all aspects of a source. They also helped me on recognizing how to use specific points that the news source has to build my paper and argument. The media, I believe, is very helpful on developing a writer’s stance and can really make the difference on someone’s writing. The more strong of a stance they have, the better the writing is. So when a professor requires students to look at more than one source, it helps the students realize that the first article isn’t always the best

You would think a writing class would only teach you how to write papers, but not until college did I realize the complexity of a writing class where other than writing it integrates methods of research, reflection, and reading for instance I never realized the complexity of reading and what to simply look for when reading text. In high school the idea of talking to the text where writing notes on the side while reading normally gave me enough information to get by. Thus never grasping the complexity of the text because the means were unknown. It was not until I was introduced to the rhetorical situation diagram in 1020. Prior to the rhetorical situation diagram we were given an assignment where we were to interpret three different viewpoints central around a single argument about oil.…

I chose to revise the first and forth essay. I chose these because they are the shortest essays. I know you wanted me to revise my research essay because I did not have parenthetical citations, but during my writing center visit I asked about those and I learned where they should be and how they should look. When I revised my papers I tried to think about the questions someone else who is not familiar with the topics would ask about my papers and I answered them.…

For eighteen years, I have roamed this earth, and for thirteen of those years I have been able to harness my craft in writing. As I look back on those times, I see how much I have improved. I learned that I despised word count essays and loved creative writing assignments. My literacy journey began in kindergarten where they taught us how to write out the alphabet, my name, and simple sentences. I don’t remember everything that about my time in kindergarten, but I do remember how frustrated I was trying to write out my name.…

    1) My overall opinion on how this semester is going learning Latin is positive and I think it is going very well. I have improved my daily study routine by adding the tried and true method of old fashion handwriting vocabulary words into my notebook. The class was introduced to the Memrise online resource in the language lab and that has definitely helped me identify my need to learn to spell Latin correctly. I have no problem picking out the correct meaning and translating individual Latin words if I see it in a list, but writing from memory has always been difficult for me.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…

I do not revise my essays very much besides taking into consideration my peer’s comments.
