My Reflection On What I Learned In My Writing Class

Good Essays
In high school, I excelled at writing, and my grades reflected that. However, throughout high school, writing became a routine thing for me. I would look at the prompt and begin writing. I was challenged many times but forgot why it was important to be challenged. To me, an academic learner is someone who challenges themselves in areas they already thought they knew about. Throughout this semester, I was forced to analyze why I was actually doing things and why I thought certain things. The commonplace book allowed me to reflect on what my main focus was on my works of writing and also how things can always relate back to each other, this probably being why one of tags I used a lot was reflection. The exercises and questions we answered on …show more content…
Sometimes I would wonder if things we did in class were really helping me, and it made me become uninterested. However, I can now say that those exercises are what helped me the most. I would question why we were reading things in the writing reference but now looking back at my post on my blogs, I realize that those meaningless exercises to me were what made me do so well on my papers. I forgot how important it was to do the smaller assignments, and how those would so greatly affect my ability to write a long paper. Looking back at my posts, I am able to see how well they helped me develop tools. On many of the posts I could have used the tag, focus, because all of them helped me to focus down my ideas and use the surrounding information I had to further develop my idea. However, I only included that tag on posts that I thought really provided me with critical tools. One of the post I tagged with this certain tag was the one about the organ sales essay. In this post I was asked to look at each of the paragraphs and come up with a mini outline for each one of them. This really helped me, and I wish I would have done this exercise in the beginning of the year because this technique of using an outline really helped me when writing a long or short paper. It helped me focus my ideas and organize my paper. A thing I found hard in all of my papers was focusing my ideas and not letting my supporting …show more content…
This was really important to me and something that I really liked. In our society today, the media is something that has a huge impact on us. One of the tags I used was media, I used this tag because this was something that we used in class that affected my writing. In most exercises we were looking at outside sources, one of those sources being the news. We focused on the news when it came to the North Dakota Pipeline. We looked at multiple news sites, and reflected on that. By responding to these articles, it helped me become aware of how biased websites can sometimes be. It helped me realize that when looking for outside sources I have to be careful on making sure I am paying close attention to all aspects of a source. They also helped me on recognizing how to use specific points that the news source has to build my paper and argument. The media, I believe, is very helpful on developing a writer’s stance and can really make the difference on someone’s writing. The more strong of a stance they have, the better the writing is. So when a professor requires students to look at more than one source, it helps the students realize that the first article isn’t always the best

My development as a writer has throughout this course has been an exciting one. During high school my teachers were very strict in what they wanted which in ways helped my writing but in other ways it hurt my writing. This course has given me the freedom to write about things that interest me while helping me grow. It has made me mindful of my grammar, which I normally just did whatever, and it has also given me the chance to improve by means of useful feedback from my professor. My writing process has gone from last minute essays to real thought out essays.…

Secondly, while creating my writing piece I was reminded how to properly format and structure as well as choose better use of language. Every writing proposal I was presented with had a certain format and structure. For example, the way I would set up a paper explaining a problem versus the way I would set up an argument piece are very different. My use of language though this course has developed by creating sentences that flow nice and smooth. Finally, revising drafts and receiving feedback from my teacher and classmates has helped for the most part.…

I was really challenged by this assignment due to the fact that I enjoy structure with my papers and writing. Once I decided on a public service announcement poster I could easily plan and organize all of my thoughts an ideas. I had to create my own structure and layout for my project which is something I have never done so at first I found it rather challenging. However, in the end with the lectures and activities in class I was able to create a PSA poster series that was successful in getting my point across to my specific audience. Now writing my final paper for this class I understand how I struggled with the different assignments in different ways.…

Then you have to write on it with my experience throughout this class, I will assume I didn’t understand anything clearly because of the grade I had received. The reason why I said I didn't have a clear understanding because I'm so use to my teachers explaining everything and I knew what was expected. I can apply this in the future by making sure I understand the reading because it has a big effect on my writing. I would say I haven't learned much about the stages of the writing process. I think the most important part of the writing process is engaging the reader because you want to catch the readers attention.…

I know when college comes I will be very grateful for this class. The first introduction paper I wrote in this class proved to me how much work I really needed to do throughout the course of this class. With the different assignments, in class activities, and various different papers to write my writing began to evolve. My approach to writing not only changed but became an entirely different routine. Instead of diving head first into a writing assignment, I now think about the different things I need to do and the ideas I need to include to make that paper the best it can be.…

What I ended up doing was completing a paper with the best of my ability and expecting it to be graded at a minimal score. Each one of my papers exceeded the minimal score and gave me confidence as a writer, a feat I did not accomplished until now. Scoring beyond the minimal expectations for myself did not only raise my confidence as a writer but the results behind my success came from the techniques I learned in the class. I believe I finally learned a formulaic structure to follow with tackling written assignments. Personally, starting any type of paper or written assignment has been a challenge for me in the past, however it has changed after what I learned during the semester.…

Research Essay Draft I used my outline to start writing my draft, and I thought I had everything in place then I found myself struggling with the order of my information. I knew I had over thought the process and starting doubting how I was writing my paper. The eLearning info suggested stepping away and taking a break from the paper. I then came back to the task and reread, reordered and rewrote the sections that needed work. This process really helped me dive deep and really work through my thoughts and ideas.…

After reading long articles such as Lu et al.’s and Henig’s together in class, I studied some strategies such as focusing on topic sentences, introduction or concluding paragraphs when I am trying to get the gist of the article. Also, I learned the importance of writing summaries because in this course, despite which genres are we working on, we always started with summary since it will help us to understand the main ideas of the articles. Personally, I also sense a change in my writing process after taking this course. Before taking this class, I tend to follow what my brain and thoughts when I write. However, after hearing so many lectures presented in class, I begin to improve my writing from the creating process: I start to care about what will readers anticipate and when writing the papers, I will go back to check the subjects of each sentence in the same paragraph to keep the topic in focus.…
