Mayella didn’t have a lot of power because she was a female, however it did help her during the trial against Tom. Mayella did not have rights because she was a woman and her father, Bob Ewell was often drunk and beat Mayella. Bob is the guilty one of raping Mayella. He had all the power over Mayella, not only because he is her father, but because he is her father. In Maycomb, Alabama, the Ewells lived behind the dump and were known as the poor family in town and the poor were not treated the same way as the rich were treated. So Mayella wasn’t treated with respect by the people, but Tom treated her with so much respect since he felt bad for her. Tom wasn’t rich, but he had a job, although he still wasn’t treated with respect because he was African-American.
