After moving to town, her interaction with her extended family was more limited but did not stop completely. She recalls never spending much time on the farm and stated that she was not the favorite. Her mother’s family lived two hours away and they only saw them occasionally on holidays and at family reunions. Her relationship with each sibling was very different. She remembered being closer with her brother than her sister because she and her brother would run and play, while her sister preferred to interact with adults. Her parents remained married until they died after she and her siblings were grown.

While her parents both worked at the family owned grocery store year round, both of my parents are teachers and have the same scheduled vacation breaks as my sister and I. While she was a middle child with both an older brother and a younger sister, I am the oldest with only one younger sister. We were both raised in strict homes where we never experienced divorce and were expected to follow rules that were laid out for us.
