Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a form of a cognitive behavioral treatment developed to treat individuals who have been diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder (BPD). However research has shown that the dialectical therapy could be used to treat a wide range of disorders such as substance dependence, eating disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While doing this research I found out that dialectical behavior therapy is treatment program that a patient has to go to for a year. Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness where patients have problems managing their feelings and emotions. Some times when patients have BPD they also suffer from other disorders. BPD patients could also be suffering from depression, anxiety, abusing substances, and even have eating disorders. When working with BPD patient’s suicide is a topic that needs elevated within the first couple of sessions. The Dialectical behavior therapy for BPD patients are completed in four different stages. During the first stage of treatment patients learn skills to reduce life threatening situations. Patients also learn skills for help their relationships. Also to learn skills to help their behavior issues. For the second stage patients are learning how to apply their skills to their life situations. Also how to improve situations in positive ways. The third stage patients are normally in the moving on stage. Patients at this stage usually understand how to handle the situations in positive way. The finally stage helps patients overcome issues they don’t think they can get through. This stage also tries to teach the patient that they are right and they can make decision on their own.
