What Is Littering A Big Problem In The World

Improved Essays
Littering is a big problem in the world, so big that 3.8 billion pounds of trash end up in the ocean every year. Littering is illegal, but the punishments don’t stop people from dropping that piece of trash instead of walking it over to the trash can. Littering happens everywhere, even in our national parks, polluting the air all over the world, and humans are the main factor. National parks are used for conservation and protecting land and animals, but they are slowly turning into landfills. These parks should spend their money on making the park better, but instead they spend thousands of dollars a year on cleaning up trash. This trash is also hazardous to animals’ health. If they consume the trash they can become sick or choke.

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

It may not be apparent to many when going about their day that they could potentially be breaking laws. Frank Trippett in his article claims that many people break laws everyday without even noticing it whether it be jaywalking, littering, or even just being too loud in a public domain. Some people would feel as if everybody should know the laws and know that, for example, jaywalking is illegal, many of us know this but for the young kids who have never been talked to or confronted by the police would not be aware to these laws which therefore would lead them to just be “crossing the street” cause they did not want to wait at the light. Many people break laws all the time, most are aware when they do, but others are not as educated about the law system or how it works or what laws even actually exist.…

Nonetheless, unlike how issues concerning stormwater and rainwater are viewed as “significant,” issues relating to littering are not. There is an immoderate amount of waste that can be found in the laneways of Melbourne due to improper disposal of waste products. In countless laneways and streets, coffee cups, used tissues, half-eaten foods, gum wrappers, and several other rubbish. Although there are rubbish bins that were found located in quite a number of locations, and signs stating ‘No Dumping’(see figure 6), it is evident that there is quite a number of people who choose to avoid using these bins and decide to disobey this rule. However, the amount of rubbish seems to differ highly depending on how frequently the laneway was found.…

For example, if cities were so clean that there was not a single piece of trash on the street, or in any public place, littering might not be such a big deal. In one example, “a stream downhill from a West Virginia puppy mill was found to have a coliform bacteria load 400 times greater than the legal limit” (HSUS). The dog feces also transfer to the soil; there is a high probability that any person or animal that comes into contact with the waste will get infected. The pathogens can be harmful to humans and even cause deadly infections. In puppy mills it is common for dog feces to build up on the ground. This produces methane, which is a powerful and dangerous greenhouse gas.…

This would lead to world wide panic, as not doing our part to ensure the world continues, will end it. Broken down, this means that every trash piece left on the ground will potentially lead to an animal's death, continuing down a very extensive food chain, all the way to humans.…
