What does leading by example, even symbolize? As stated in the dictionary, the definition of leading is: “to act as a guide or influence,” and the definition of example is: “a person, action, object, etc., that is worthy of imitation.” According to the opinion of Wilfred Peterson the definition of a leader is: “The leader sees things through the eyes of his followers. He puts himself in their shoes and helps them make their dreams come true. The leader does not say, “Get going!” Instead he says, “Let’s go!” and leads the way. He does not walk behind with a whip; he is out in front with a banner.” So what do these two words express when put together? People that lead by example, tend to do the right thing, whether someone is there watching or not. According to the dictionary the definition of leading by example is: “to act as a guide by a person that is worthy of imitation.” Reported in the article The Importance of Leading by Example, by Chris Newton, “leadership is the process by which one individual influences the behaviors, attitudes, and thoughts of others. Leading by example is a trait of a true leader. They see everyone’s potential and encourage and inspire those around them. A group of individuals with poor leadership will quickly degenerate into conflict, because everyone sees things differently and will naturally lean toward different solutions.” Children in this generation are drawn to “anti” role models because they are popular and are on television.
