The relational leadership model that was taught to me in HDF 415 is one of my favorite models, because it involves knowing the individuals you are leading, and using that knowledge to empower them, and help them grow as a leader. I see this theory come out a lot on the North Woods Challenge course. When facilitating a retreat for the challenge course the leader must be inclusive of everyone, there will be people who’s’ biggest challenge is getting out of the car and into the mud, and there are others who will be trying to swing from tree to tree. The differences don’t stop there, but as always the leader must be respectful and inclusive towards all of those participating. The entire challenge course is process-oriented and is done to help the…

As a junior at Northville High School, I am already discovering my passion for business through my participation and leadership roles in organizations such as DECA. I have obtained not only extensive marketing and general business knowledge through self-studying for competitive tests, but also practical communication, presentation, and sales skills while representing various business professionals in judged roleplay scenarios. I have placed at the district, state, and international level in my events, and this year I will have competed at the International Career Development Conference for my third year. These experiences give me a good foundation of understanding business concepts, and I plan to learn more about how businesses operate in the global market through the Business is Global program at the Kelley School of Business.…

Regardless of your warning, business majors continue to be among the top most successful graduates and hold increasingly valuable skills such as communication, problem solving, and decision making- most of which they learn in business school. I would hope that in my six years prior to being promoted to an assistant principal, I would have laid the foundation for positive relationships with the students, or at least some pocket of students. Additionally, I would think about the mindset of not necessarily the students, but the current faculty and staff and begin to measure the outlook that is currently in place. From here I would want to make changes that lead the community to a more positive mindset and outlook. Green (2013) states, “Effective leaders emphasized the development of interpersonal relationships while focusing on the personal needs of followers and the development of the kinds of relationships that would motivate followers to set and achieve high performance goals”.…

For EDA 6503 The Principalship, the final course of the Educational Leadership program, I worked closely with Patricia Carson, principal at Mandarin Oaks Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL, to complete my practicum experiences. Ms. Carson has been a school principal for 22 years and the principal of Mandarin Oaks for the last 14 years. According to Ms. Carson, the job of a principal has changed immensely in the last 10 years, and it is more important than ever to keep up with current research-based instructional delivery and teaching strategies. Ms. Carson allowed me to participate in a variety of activities that shed light on the various roles and duties of a principal. Based on the data from the EDG 6285 data project, the major focus…

    Peer Academic Leader

I’m interested in becoming a Peer Academic Leader because I have a passion in helping my fellow students succeed. One thing that two years at a community college and three semesters here at UNCG has taught me is that college has its ups and downs, but it really helps if someone is there that can be a guide when things get tough. Being a Peer Academic Leader is an important job because coming to a four-year institution the size of UNCG might be overwhelming to some students, and they might not know what resources they have at their disposal, so as a Peer Academic Leader I would be the person they could come to when they need help navigating around campus, around Greensboro, or help navigating the resources they have available to them. As a transfer…

Top 200 Program Essay People always ask, “why are you so young?”. This question has always been answered with my ambition to grasp leadership roles, and explore new ideas and experiences. The Top 200 Program was created for strongly driven students who seek career readiness skills to thrive independently, but grow as a unit. And this is truly a reflection of my character as I am constantly seeking new ways to get involved both academically and within my community to understand others, myself, and the world better. For example, as the director of corporate relations at the Human Resource Student Association, I connect with industry professionals -who were once a part of this program- to bridge the gap between academics at Ryerson to the workplace.…

According to Peter Northouse (2015), this leadership style involves communication with the followers and leader, not a linear or one way event but an interactive event (Northouse, 2015, p. 6). This type of leadership engages everyone and makes followers feel valued, and as if they can communicate any issues that may arise. In relationship leadership, the leader is an advocate for making the work place pleasant, treating others with respect and dignity, as well as building camaraderie and helping people get along. This leadership style is what I feel will help subordinate’s work together and become more productive, allowing each person to be accountable with less conflict. Although not all conflicts are bad, improvements have come about as a result of some conflicts which in turn are a good thing.…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
