Many stories in One World have the sentiment of goodbyes and heartache. One of them that has stood out is not being able to say a proper goodbye. When it comes to “Kelemo’s Women” by Morola Wood, the writer can communicate how a person suffers from hardships and can continue living because of a promise made to a loved one under the terrible circumstance. The idea of people being in uncomfortable situations is one human go through every day but when a friend you are personally fond of is close to dying you go and visit them and try to make light of the situation, being able to take their mind of the impending future just for a moment. “Maryanne Clouds Today” by Ivan Gabriel Rehorek. “The Third and Final Continent” by Jhumpa Lahiri, has a young man who leaves his home country with a bright future can persevere enough to become a professional in America. He becomes a border with an older woman who he has become fond of. Iriola follows the man that she loves her mother lays dying in a hospital. She has sacrificed so much for this man and now as her mother is dying she tells her “Iriola, trust no one. Allow yourself to be pulled like no one. I mean no one” (Wood 22). This is her mother pleaded with her not to follow a man that has no future. Her mother’s words were kept a secret and as she escaped death with her beloved Kelemo. As they were caught she used her intelligence to her advantage and was going to keep the promise she had made. “I pray Kelemo survives. I suppose he will wonder why, when he learns about the choices I have made. But Kelemo was not in the hospital room when mother breathed her last. And I always obeyed my mother” (Wood 26). Even if it broke her heart she was able to keep her word until the end she did not say
