Marx and Engels saw history though a materialist theory. This meant that they were concerned about the production of material goods and how that production influenced the owners and the laborers throughout history. Marx based his ideas of capitalism on what he had seen personally. Marx saw the factory and land owners becoming very rich and having a luxurious life style while the laborers were poor and leading very hard lives. Marx believed that the inequality of the lives between workers and owner would create anger among workers and start a revolt. In the 19th century there where very few working situations that were ideal in any aspect.
