Feel the equality of both sides of the back. Feel the equality of both sides of the rib cage. 3. Keep the arms level with each other. If you have trouble feeling horizontal in the arms, imagine a water balance placed between the left and right elbows.…

During an outing to McDonalds Joanni ordered his meal (pancakes, sausage, and apple juice). He was able set up his eating area as well as gather the appropriate materials for his meal. Joanni was able to cut his pancakes with verbal and physical cues from his occupational therapist. He fed himself throughout the entire meal. Joanni also was able to clean up after his meal independently.…
Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital provides therapy, treatment, support, and programs for physically and developmentally disabled children and their families. Many of the children I teach are permanent residents of the hospital; many will never be able to walk, to speak or to focus for long enough to write an essay like this one. My primary volunteer contribution to this community is teaching swimming and water safety and helping to provide aquatic therapy to the children. They experience a freedom of movement in the water that is critical to their physical and mental well-being, which means that I have a significant responsibility. Bloorview is a very special place, and is known for its culture of acceptance, respect, and inclusivity.…
“Walk-to-Dine” is a program that focuses on maintaining resident’s highest level of endurance, strength, and overall well-being. There are several studies that have been performed over this subject that conclude that this program is beneficial. The strategy is to give the residents who cannot walk to the dining room independently, the chance to do so with help from the staff. The program not only allows for a natural dining experience for the resident, but it also provides a form of regular exercise for the ones who aren’t already participating in physical therapy or have been discharged from therapy. It gives the residents a form of physical activity while providing social interaction with other residents, which is good for the high percentage…

All three goals are evidence-based interventions and were created to provide occupational therapy services for Jane twice a week for about 40-45 minute session. In addition, caregivers will be educated during the intervention so that they can continue assisting the client when OT service is not provided. Feeding…
Adhering to standard procedures for PROM exercise are frequently difficult working in a long-term care facility. One instance I recall, involved an older gentleman residing in a veteran’s nursing home who was receiving therapy following a stroke. The resident was a large man, who required the use of a lift for all transfers. Additionally, he had recently developed an ulcer in his sacral region. The severity of his ulcer placed him under movement restrictions to encourage wound healing, and consequently; placed him at an increased risk for further loss of motion on his affected side.…
While observing Occupational Therapy Assistant Fatima deCouto-Garcia, (a BCC program OTA graduate), at The New Bedford Rehab Hospital, we were tasked with focusing on recognizing the performance skill deficits and contextual factors that brought a client to seek Occupational Therapy services. The facility we visited is considered an acute long term rehabilitation hospital and the patients we observed each had complex multi-facetted symptoms, diagnosis and treatment protocols. For the purpose of this reflection we will focus on one patient, a 45 year old woman, Jane Doe, who 6 weeks prior had her left leg amputated above the knee. Jane was described as a homeless, diabetic, suffering from depression. The high level of Jane’s daily methadone dosage was preventing her acceptance to a skilled nursing…
Adrianna shows good gross motor control, doing yoga is a great way to help her to continue to increase strength, body awareness, flexibility as well as coordination. It requires the use of the whole body (from head to toe), which is a great way to in engage all the muscles in the body allowing her to practice balance and coordination. This activity also requires her to use concentration as she focuses on shifting her weight to conform into various body movements and positions. Another activity that can help with gross motor skills is to practice balancing a beanbag on her head. As she walks around both forwards and backwards she has to try her best to not let the beanbag fall off.…
I further suggested that she could ask family members to take the programme and bookmarks as souvenir for her. She could even ask them to take pictures if she wished. She was excited about the suggestions and said she was feeling better. She then told me some of the fun times they had together while she ate a sandwich and had some juice. 2.…
Tinetti Balance Test. This test is a standardized evaluation of mobility and stability which takes 8 to 10 minutes to complete.2 Balance is assessed in sitting, arising, immediate and prolonged standing, and turning reflecting body control and strength. In gait testing, stance, trunk stability, and path deviations are observed. Step length, swing and clearance on each foot are compared for continuity and symmetry. A score of 18/28 or less indicates a patient is at high risk, score of 19-23 out of 28 indicates moderate risk for falls and 24/28 or more indicates low risk for falls.…
Wii Fit is a video game that was designed by Hiroshi Matsunaga at Nintendo, which was released originally in Japan and then subsequently released to the United States in 2008. At release, there were over one million units sold and it was reported to have sold out at pre-launch sales nationwide. With such a high demand for this new type of active video game and shortage of supplies, it created a market for increased profit that more than doubled the base of the price at places, such as Amazon and Ebay. There have been several upgrades and new releases, over the years, to continue to give a variety of things to do using the Wii Fit.…
