What Is John's Reputation In The Crucible

In the play The Crucible, John Proctor states,”Because it is my name! Because I can not have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”
John was trying to explain that did not want his written confession hung up on the church door for everyone to see. John believed that it was more of a sin to have a written document saying he was a witch, rather than the court verbally saying he was a witch to the entire town. If people saw his name hanging up on the door of the church, they would think he is an un-holy man. In comparison, if the court says verbally he is a witch, then the town would sooner or later forget about it, and they wouldn’t be reminded every time they go to church that he is a witch. Not only does he not want the people of the town to see his name, but he doesn’t want his family and God to see what he has done. His friends names would have also been ruined too! If his name were to be on that door, the reputation of his friends would be considered bad too, because it would look like they have been hanging around a witch.

He is honorable for sticking up and coming forward and admitting his flaws. Even though he agreed to using witchcraft, he refused to name any other people of his community. The reason why he tore up the paper was that he said a man's good name is all he has to give to his children. It would have left a mark on them forever. To John, his name is the most important aspect of his character. If his name would have been posted, then his name would be rotten and will forever be remembered for that. The whole point is, is that he is being honorable by trying to save his name,and his family's’
