As Louie finds himself in a life-threatening situation in Part 3 of the novel, it is important for us to understand the perspective of both the Japanese and Americans in the war. If we look at the war in the same way that each side did, we can see why they acted upon the other in a certain way and what what their mindset was during this period of fighting.
