Why is child abuse illegal, but hitting a child while spanking him/her is legal? Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver causes injury or emotional harm to a child. Spanking a child hard enough could cause serious negative repercussions. Also even if the child stops throwing a temper tantrum because he/she got spanked, does not mean the child understands why he/she shouldn’t be acting out in the first place. Susan Bitensky tries to make the point that spanking should be illegal in the New York daily news article “Yes, America we can ban spanking.”…

There is no mention of it, but it would be important to know whether or not Nadine is self harming in any way. If so, we could have added a Z-code to her diagnosis--Z91.5 Personal History of Self-Harm, which would have helped her receive specific treatment for this issue, if it exists. Another thing we would have liked to know more about is Nadine’s relationship with her parents. We were given very little information about this topic which makes it difficult to interpret in any particular way. There seems to be tension between Nadine and her mother, and her mother is described as being “a little frightening” and “aggressive.”…

Interpersonal violence against women is endemic in our society. Thus, it is estimated that 14% to 20% of women will experience rape at some point in their lives; that 25% to 28% will be physically abused in a sexual-romantic relationship; and that 8% to 24% will be stalked by someone they know or by a stranger. When these statistics are added to the 25% to 35% likelihood that the average adult woman has been sexually abused as a child, it is clear that the epidemiology of interpersonal violence against women is a pressing social issue (Briere & Jordan, 2004). Equally concerning is the association between these various forms of victimization and mental health issues in women. Female survivors of sexual trauma are vulnerable to a wide range of…

Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, was developed in 1993 by Marsha M. Linehan as a treatment for clients meeting the criteria for borderline personality disorder who are chronically suicidal (Linehan and Chen, 2004). Linehan developed this therapy out of the sentiment that there was an influx in borderline personality disorder diagnoses, and no successful treatment options specific to this diagnosis (Linehan, 1993). Linehan was influenced by behavior therapy and by Eastern mindfulness. The theory assumes that the DBT clinician is at a certain level of acceptance towards their client’s current distress (Linehan and Chen, 2004).…
