What Is Jack's Rivalry In Lord Of The Flies

“Ralph launched himself like a cat; stabbed, snarling, with the spear, and the savage doubled up.”(Chapter 12 pg. 195) is another quote that provides a precise illustration of the dangers of rivalry in man vs man. Jack had decided to set the island on fire in order to smoke out Ralph. This shows the danger of man vs man because Jack is trying to hunt for Ralph, and as a result, it could have caused the death of Ralph if he wasn’t saved by a British Naval. What the author, William Golding did here is that he displayed how Jack and Ralph are going against each other because now Ralph had officially became Jack’s rival. Not only does Golding try to show both of them going against each other, he also exposes how Jack is becoming paranoid. Since

Golding uses Ralph’s role in the mock fight to make ideas of ‘heroes’ and ‘villains’ more complex than they seemed. From the beginning of the book, Golding has positioned the reader to see Ralph as the ‘hero’ and Jack as the ‘villain’ through various techniques, one of them being that Ralph is the focaliser. So far it has been quite clear to us who the hero is, however the mock fight changes our views on this. While it seems likely that jack would take part and enjoy hurting one of the boys, it is shocking and concerning for the reader when they find out that Ralph “was fighting to get near, to get a handful of [Roberts] brown, vulnerable flesh”. The noun phrase ‘brown, vulnerable flesh’ suggests that Robert was an innocent and easy target which positions the reader to feel sympathy for Robert and consequently feel a disliking towards Ralph.…

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, conflict - both internal and external - portrays a major development in the theme and plot of the young boys in this novel. On an island composed of only pre-adolescent boys, it is unquestionable that there would be conflict amongst them. Golding blatantly shows the reader the external conflicts that occur between one another, including both physical and verbal altercations. The author also cryptically gives the reader a display of the conflict the boys struggle with within themselves and their own thoughts. Despite the many instances of external conflict, the subtle internal conflicts are much more critical to the plot and overall theme of Lord of the Flies.…
