Many believed in 1812 the second war for independence occurred. This statement like many other things in this war had different perspectives. The war of 1812 was a war between four main groups. These included the Americans, Canadians, Native Americans and British. The War of 1812 was a thirty-three month long war between the British and United States which all groups perceived differently.
The War of 1812 did not just start out of nowhere, the british were the antagonists of this war. It first started when the the British and the french enforced economic sanctions against the United States America. The British saw this as “The year Napoleon marched to Moscow” (pbs.org). They believed that this was a very annoying sideshow and that the Americans stabbed them in the back while they were in a fight of their own with the French. When the British agreed to the Orders in Council, this agreed that the war has started. The British enforced this to block trading for the Americans, however this really got the Americans angrier. Some people believed that the Orders in Council could be relaxed while others did not. Also, many believed this was a decision way beyond politics. This was mainly due to the fact that no one really knew why we fought the war in the first place. “An average American citizen viewed this war as a very obscure war in which the Star Spangled banner was created, the capitol was burned, and of what occurred in New Orleans” (War of 1812). The americans viewed the battle of New Orleans as a huge success and turning point in our country. Some reasons why the Americans viewed this war as obscure was because there was no great president assciated with the war. James Madison was the president at the time and was not very involved in this war. Alos, there were no great war generals in this war, and the causes of this war were very complex and misunderstood. “As America's second and last war against Great Britain, it echoed the ideology and issues of the American Revolution. It was the second and last time that America was the underdog in a war and the second and last time that the nation tried to conquer Canada” (An American Perspective on the War of 1812). This quote from pbs.org shows just how much obscure this war was. Overall, the Americans viewed this war as very odd but also they believed they won some of the battles in the
