ISIS Indoctrination of Children ISIS, also known as IS or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, is a large and powerful terrorist group that originated from Iraq and Syria. Members in ISIS are known as jihadists. Jihad means “holy war” and is not a violent concept, but in this context, the word Jihad stands for people who are severely against nonbelievers. ISIS was founded in 1999 and is currently lead by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Very little is known about the ISIS leader except that he was born in Samarra, which is located in the north of Baghdad (Waugh). ISIS continues the want to expand their group to other locations.
