According to our notes, Hurler’s syndrome is autosomal recessive; it affects both genders; it causes early changes in infant’s normal appearance; it causes a child to have metabolism or storage problem, growth deficiency, progressive mental retardation, progressive coarsening of facial features, corneal clouding, progressive hearing loss (conductive or mixed), and middle ear disorders. Jervell and Lange-Nielsen syndrome is also autosomal recessive, and it causes affected children to have cardiovascular disorder and profound congenital sensorineural hearing loss in both …show more content…
The article, “Early Prenatal Diagnosis of Hurler's Syndrome with Termination of Pregnancy and Confirmatory Findings on the Fetus” by Crawfurd at al. published in J Med Genet in 1973 reported that a Hurler's syndrome was diagnosed in an 18 week old fetus of a woman and the fetus was aborted. My personal comment on this is that, although the abortion was made for clinical exploration of the syndrome, we cannot deny the fact that the mother consented for it since the baby would not live longer anyways. It has now become a practice in the medical field to suggest termination of a pregnancy if the baby has defects and has the potential of not surviving normal after birth. I just have a personal biased position on this

Review Questions # 5 2. Distinguish between autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive disorders and provide a couple examples of each. When dealing with genetic disorders its important to understand how they are inherited. There are two ways a child can inherited a genetic disorder from their parents. Autosomal dominant disorder is where one parent has a genetic disorder in which it has already manifested such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, marfan’s syndrome, and achondroplasia(dwarfism) and this dominant gene is inherited by their child who will also develop the disorder.…

Doctors of today have advanced tools and technology to look at an embryo and tell if it is healthy and ready for life. Many mothers experience complication in pregnancy that can lead to a child being born with disabilities. As stated in JUSTIFYING INFANTICIDE AND NON-VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA By Peter Singer, infants can be born with “irreversible intellectual disabilities, will never be rational, self-conscious beings.” With the knowledge of the child’s health before birth it gives a morally difficult question to answer. Should the child be born?…

Some abortions are done in order to save the child’s life; such as they wouldn’t survive past birth or wouldn’t have a fulfilling life. A woman named Julie was twenty weeks pregnant when she had an ultrasound done to identify the sex of her child. The doctors discovered that the baby’s brain ventricles were doubled in size. This meant that if the baby was carried to term, it would be developed at about the amount a two month old fetus would be. She chose to terminate the pregnancy, rather than risk having a premature baby and having to watch it either die or live in a hospital for months…

Mutated genes may cause cells to act differently than expected. Usher syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The term autosomal means that the mutated gene is not located on either of the chromosomes that determine a person’s sex; in other words, both males and females can have the disorder and can pass it along to a child. The word recessive means that, to have Usher syndrome, a person must receive a mutated form of the Usher syndrome gene from each parent. If a child has a mutation in one Usher syndrome gene but the other gene is normal, he or she is predicted to have normal vision and hearing.…

Women whose fetus show signs of defects consider abortion because of the further suffering of the fetus as it develops throughout childhood. There are some cases in which if the mother decides to give birth to a defected infant, the chances of death of the child is either high or instant. In a article by Listland, they agree that "It is the woman’s right as a mother to decide what is best for her child. No weight of society or majority moral opinion of philosophers, religious or even state leaders have the right to decide for her." This statement voices out Women 's Rights to provide decisions of their own to determine whether the child shall live a life through sufferings, or to prevent the child 's…
