Hope for the Jews
Holocaust: “a sacrifice consumed by fire” (Merriam-Webster). The Holocaust was a very terrible time in history. One way the Nazis treated the Jews was by government discrimination and inhumane treatment. The Jews weren’t allowed to go to school, which was hard for the kids and getting them an education. The Jews had curfews where they had to be in their houses and off the streets by 9pm.There were no jobs allowed for Jews, which meant all the grocery stores were closed and they had very little to eat. Yanek’s Uncle Moshe once traded in his daily rations to a Kopa to get Yanek a new job outside the camp (Gratz, 73). Uncle Moshe understood that Yanek was young, had no parents, and that he was his only hope to for getting through this nightmare. It wasn’t just about the prisoners having hope for themselves but also helping others. When Yanek was in the death march, he saw a boy that couldn’t stay on both feet anymore due to the cold that was making him weak. But just like the boy, Yanek was weak and he couldn’t hold his own weight. He didn’t want to leave the boy because he knew that if he was in his shoes he wouldn’t want to be turned to the Kopas. Yanek and the boy were far from the front and they were slowing down but they couldn’t stop. After a couple of minutes has passed, a prisoner came to Yanek and helped him carry the boy (Gratz, 179). Yanek was joyful, but he didn’t have to say anything to the prisoner, due to the fact they were all helping one another.
The Holocaust was a horrible time in history for many people. The Jews weren’t treated like humans they were more treated like animals. A lot of the Jews were overrun by Hitler and his army.
