Over and Out: High School edition When people feel that there is no hope or chance to strive for what they want, they will give up. Teens in this generation today make decisions without thinking about how it effects their future. The high school dropout rate is higher than it has ever been now than it was 40 years ago (Rumberger 3). Students these days neglect to understand that the problem why they are getting distracted is teen pregnancies, and high school cliques, alongside with these two causes’ leads to dropping out with a long term struggle without a high school diploma to be successful. Whether it be by “accident” or not, teens have unprotected sex which leads to a bun in the oven. Pregnancy is already a struggle itself. Pregnant teens taking on responsibility for another human life while still in high school is not impossible but will stress teenage girls to the maximum, which leaves them no other option but to drop out and forced to get a job to support their baby or family. At least 70% of teenage girls drop out because of pregnancy with the lack of financial aid to support their baby (Mangel). According to “Teen Pregnancy, Discrimination, and The Dropout Rate” girls who gave birth would return to school if they received greater support from adults, such as self-motivation for girls to have more confidence in the school environment where pregnant teens feel discouraged for their choices. The discrimination against pregnant teens from teachers, administrators and even some counselors’ is a major factor to their high school dropout rates. Both teens and adults are at fault when it comes to a situation like teen pregnancy, the teens for getting pregnant in the first place being so young, and the adults that lack understanding to help prevent the dropout of young pregnant teens who desperately need guidance. Students who expand their mind into learning opportunities in after-school activities show higher rates of school attendance, improved attitudes and of course lower dropout rates according to “National Center for Education Statistics.” Having students stay after school to participate in school activities gives young people less chance of being involved in illegal activities such as drug use and gang involvement. Teachers and school administrators always recommend students to become involved in school because a student can obtain additional tutoring or homework help to improve their grades. Extra-curricular activities grabs attention from future colleges, what a student does on their free time is what colleges want more information on. Colleges want to hear if a student wasted their time doing community service, join a leadership club in school such as Renaissance or Student Council, or being apart of the school theater, etc. A reason as to why extra-curricular activities could not be completely beneficial is for the students who help support their family financially or the demands of caring for siblings or their own children after
