Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author of The Scarlet Letter. He was born July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. Winther, Sophus Keith in “Nathaniel Hawthorne: A Biography” explains that “Hawthorne was the practical, ordinary man interested in the ordinary and commonplace problems of everyday life.” Hawthorne was faced with a lot of problems which led him to his love of writing but he also went through an ordinary life. He got married and settled away from home. As his occupation as an author he wrote many short stories but he is best known for his novels The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables which was published just a year after The Scarlet Letter. Hester is an independent and a trustworthy woman who is considered an outcast according to her community because of the sin she committed, but she is not affected by what they think. She is trustworthy because she didn’t tell anyone that Dimmesdale was the person she had an affair with because she promised to protect his image that that he holds as a reverend in the society. She raised Pearl without Dimmesdale, who is the father and without Roger Chillingworth who is Hester’s husband. She fulfilled the traditional masculine father role by providing for her family and making sure Pearl had enough to be able to live happily. She had to work and make enough for the both of them and when she was questioned who and where Pearls father is, she didn’t have an answer for them because she promised Dimmesdale that she wouldn’t let anyone know that Pearl is his daughter. Another masculine trait she has was she didn’t let anyone know how she was feeling emotionally. She hid her problems and feelings from everyone and faced the world as a confident young women even though she was looked down upon by the
