William Herschel did not always have a strong interest in astronomy. However, when he was 34 his interest began to grow when he rented a small telescope. From then on, he wanted a telescope of his own. This desire led him to working on his own telescope. I do not think there was necessarily something in specific that led to his discovery. I think for the most part, it was just his interest in astronomy. On March 13, 1781 he saw an object in the sky that he originally thought was a comet. However, as he continued to observe the object, he determined that it was a planet. He named this planet Uranus, meaning the Greek god of the sky.
