What Is Heart Valve Disease?

Decent Essays
Heart valve disease is when a valve doesn’t work the way it is supposed to. A valve can either have trouble opening or closing. If this occurs, blood isn’t able to move through the chambers like it’s supposed to. When patients need a heart valve replacement surgery, one of the surgical options is to use a pig valve for the replacement. Pig valves have been used in human hearts for over 20 years. The Heart Valve Surgical website states that human heart valves and pig heart valves are very similar. How?

The cardiac problems vary from minor defects that respond to medication therapy to major defects that require surgery. The most common defects are atrioventricular septal defect, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and tetralogy of fallot (Carman, et. al, 2017). Atrioventricular septal defect (ASD) is a passageway or hole in the wall that divides the right atrium from the left atrium. Most children are asymptomatic, however a large defect can cause increased blood flow leading to heart failure.…

Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in the world with almost 25% of the deaths resulting from cardiovascular events or strokes. A particularly dangerous form of heart disease is mitral regurgitation (MR) which affects 200,000 people every year in the US alone. The Mitral valve is a key site of failure due to its location between the left atrium and left ventricle, it prevents the backflow of oxygenated blood into the atrium during ventricular systole and constantly experiences high pressures. MR is the backflow of blood into the atrium and pulmonary veins due to the partial or complete mitral valve failure. This failure is rated on a scale from 0 to 4, 4 being severe.…

It depends upon which valve it is, and it depends upon whether it’s leaking or its stuck shut. They present in different ways over the time, but the end of the road is always the same. The end of the road is a failed heart muscle that’s not going to recover. The price of neglect too long is we can no longer fix it. Over the course of time, a heart that’s beating twice the volume it needs to because the Mitral Valve is leaking everything back in, it gets thin, it gets dilated, it gets weak and it stops squeezing.…

Synopsis Detection of heart murmur in children is a common occurrence, and is frequently benign. However, concern over serious pathology is a ubiquitous response by parents and guardians and is often not abated until thorough evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist has been performed. Given the frequent delay in assessment by a pediatric cardiologist, the authors performed an observational/interventional study of parents or guardians of otherwise healthy children (n= 258 parents/guardians=178 children) referred for evaluation of murmur designed to measure anxiety level after referral, and whether this anxiety could be reduced by provision of a fact sheet delineating the specifics of heart murmurs in the pediatric population. Mean anxiety levels were measured 2 weeks prior to consultation and 2 weeks after consultation. Prior to consultation, 60% of parents/guardians were determined to have an increased anxiety level as measured by the State Trait Anxiety Index, with a mean score of 34.9, which decreased to 30.9…

Initially, when I read the case, my first intention was to add an aldosterone antagonist to the patient’s blood pressure regimen, as well. However, according to the ACCF/AHA Guideline for the Management of Heart Failure, aldosterone receptor antagonists are recommended only in patients who have an LVEF of 35% or less (level of evidence A) and in patients after an acute MI (less than 40 days) with an LVEF of 40% or less with HF symptoms (level of evidence B). Apparently, aldosterone receptor antagonists can be harmful because of life-threatening hyperkalemia. Then I contemplated to switch to a loop diuretic, but they are not recommended unless the patient has an EF<40, a CrCl of less than 30 mL, or the patient’s BP level is becoming resistant…

Out of the many cardiovascular diseases that exist today, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is the most common. CHF is the failure of the heart to distribute adequate blood supply back to the body through the heart. The heart muscle is weakened and is no longer able to pump blood back through the heart and often becomes enlarged due to the workload it must take on. When the heart begins to fail, the lungs also tend to suffer. The lungs can fill with blood; which is known as pulmonary congestion.…

The heart is considered the “engine of life” through its ability to rhythmically pump oxygen rich blood throughout the body to supply life. Unfortunately, this vital organ is vulnerable to damage through actions of everyday life ranging from smoking, diet, physical inactivity, and consumption of alcohol. Damage to the heart results in heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease. Because of the vast complexity of the heart, heart disease branches off into various categories including “Rheumatic heart disease, Hypertensive heart disease, Ischemic heart disease, Cerebrovascular disease, Inflammatory heart disease and Valvular heart disease” (World Heart Federation, 2016). These categories branch off even further to Angina, heart attacks, stroke and Arteriosclerosis (World Heart Federation, 2016).…
