In the painting I see a man, and a woman. One slightly older than the other, they both are wearing attire you would find in the 19th century. The man is holding a 3 pronged pitchfork in the upward position, and is grasping the pitch fork just below where the wood handle and metal prongs meet. The jacket that the man is wearing over his overalls looks as though it may be some sort of dress attire. Behind the two people in the background is a gothic style house with white siding, and a light brown roof. The 2nd story window looks as if it is a church window with black 19th century drapes hanging in the window itself. Above the second story window you will find what looks to be the base of a lightning rod sitting on the crest of the roof. To the left of the woman is an overhang for the porch. The porch itself seems to wrap around the entire house. On the porch to the left of the woman you can see two plants which are in pots sitting on the floor of the porch. Behind the plants looks to be a door with the similar texture of the first story windows. It also looks as if there is some sort of cloth rolled up to act

The short story by Edgar Allen Poe the Oval Portrait would be an example of gothic literature. The short story is about a man needing a place to stay so he spends the night at an apartment to rest. He finally laid to rest and notice one painting in particular but as soon as he laid eyes on the painting he had passed out in some sort of trance. While tranced he was looking at the picture and observing every detail and admiring how life like the painting had been.…

Norman Rockwell is an artist who painted pictures that offered commentaries on society during the Civil Rights time period. He painted this picture entitled The Problem We All Live With. The first thing that catches my eye when I look at this painting is the little girl. She is dressed in all white, from her bow in her hair to the socks and shoes on her feet with notebooks in hand. She sticks out from the neutral colors of the men walking with her and the wall.…

Samir Chopra eloquently defines what American gothic is and then uses examples from the introduction sequences of The Walking Dead and American Horror Story to support his definition of the American Gothic genre. I agree with Chopra’s thesis because American Gothic Fiction includes elements specific to the battle between rationality versus irrationality, puritanism, and guilt. This genre of literature, and modern day entertainment, is known for dealing with strange things like ghosts and monsters. Chopra goes on to explain why these two shows can fit under the genre of American Gothic. Chopra describes this subgenre of gothic fiction with a few words like, “the decay of the familiar: inevitable, persistent, insidious, ever-present and perhaps…

These gothic elements, whether in the form of settings, actions, or characters, influenced American literature and are still present in many stories today. In this essay I will compare and contrast using contextual factors two murals. The first is Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximus and Attendants, a mosaic on the wall of the Sanctuary in Italy from the Byzantine era. The second being Raphael 's School of Athens, found on the wall of the Apostolic Palace, Rome painted during the Renaissance. Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximianus and Attendants, was created for religious purposes, as was a lot of the art produced during the early Byzantine Empire. In 324 CE Constantine ‘ the Great’ was a Christian emperor who set up Constantinople, originally Byzantine, a city in the east as another city to rule Christianity from, alongside the capital Rome.…
