What Is Grandpa Mort's Motivation?

Improved Essays
During the last few years of my grandpa’s life, Grandpa Mort became increasingly more and more amotivated and autonomously motivated. He spent his time doing what he wanted to do rather than what other people expected and wanted him to do. These activities were things such as joining classes, ignoring societal rules, and health decisions. At 80 years old, Grandpa Mort joined several introductory courses including Spanish, Mandarin, and Photoshop. The motivation behind filling his day with classes was mostly intrinsic because it was based off the whim of what he wanted to take. The classes he took were all chosen simply because he wanted to spend his time doing what he enjoyed- learning. Eventually, Grandpa Mort also refused to follow the unwritten societal rules of conduct. He would say inappropriate things at the wrong time mostly because he knew he could get away with it.

I feel like I could relate to both stories in a way the second story witch was written by Gerald Graff titled "Disliking Books" witch as the title says it's about how Gerald Graff does not like books witch is certainly right up my alley because i have always disliked books. I was never a good reader but there has been that rare case where ive actually found a book that i enjoined the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho so in a way i do have similarities with Gerald Graff on disliking books and he too has had that rare occasions were a book has drown his attention like the whole controversial ending to the book "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" witch forced him to read it again and in his own words "to my surprise found myself rereading it with…

Looking at Karl White the Eugenics Plague Doctor, the first thing that stood out to me is the grim appearance of the plague doctors. I remember learning a little bit about plague doctors of the Black Death in high school history classes, but I would have never imagined them to look like that. At first glance, they resemble someone who would practice black magic rather than the art of healing. From reading the preface of the artwork, these plague doctors are described as opportunistic quack doctors who took advantage of the helpless people by giving them false hope. The artwork makes a direct association of these unethical plague doctors to Karl White, who stands at the forefront of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs.…

As I first began to read “Encouraging Learning” by Hsun Tzu I thought the piece to be informative. The reading stated off with a back story in which I had believed it to be there to help the reader with a little understanding, but as I continued to read I found the reading to be very persuasive. I say this because of the examples he had given and how he talks about human nature. Hsun Tzu felt as if humans are evil by nature and that if people followed natures natural calling without mentally and physically challenging oneself to advance educationally they won’t be able to produce anything good, because only by conscious activities can we achieve virtue. Hsun Tzu stated, “A gentleman will take care in selecting the community he intends to live…
