Food waste is a topic nobody really talks about. It is even possible to say that not a lot of people are even aware of these issues. Every year 1/3 of the annual food production is thrown away in the garbage just to end up in a landfill. That’s 20 lbs of food per month; that’s basically money in the garbage. Perfectly good, edible, food is being thrown out and wasted. Countries around the world have people who are dying of hunger and here we are throwing edible food away. There has to be something we can do to end this issue. For example, companies like the Monsanto Agrochemical Company are altering our food. They put chemicals in our food to make the fruits or vegetables to seem “bigger and better” but in reality they are putting bad chemicals …show more content…
For example, family can start off by just buying the food they need. Go look at your fridge first and see if there are supplies to make a meal a family can enjoy. If there are a few items missing that is when you can go to a local store and only buy what you need. An even better option is going to a food bank and buying food there. Planning your meals that Sunday for the entire week can also save you a lot of time, money and it can help with the food waste. Another example is the option of freezing left over food and making sure it gets eaten the next day, or taken for a lunch. A few items that you can buy fresh and store in the freezer is bread. If you store bread in the freezer it stays fresh for a much longer period of time. If you buy fresh fruit and you end up not using all of the item you can always freeze the left overs and use them later in a smoothie or ice cream. Finally, a household can eliminate food waste by buying from a flee market instead of the big corporation stores. Farmers markets usually have foods from farmers or local growers that are rejected, or just left over in their garden that they cant use. Farmer’s markers don’t throw away the left over food they will take it to the food bank or the homeless shelter. These fruits and vegetables are perfectly good to eat and will save you a buck or two in the long run. If everyone made an effort around the house we can stop this food waste issue. Not only can regular people make changes but big stores and corporations can take steps to end food

Convenient food may be the quickest and easiest way to acquire, however home grown is worth the wait and patience. If someone were to walk in to a grocery store during winter and see that ‘fresh’ tomatoes are still being sold it makes them wonder how is it possible when tomatoes are not in season anymore? The answer is they are not as fresh as they appear to be. In the article, “Here’s the Unsettling Journey of Your Out-Of-Season Produce”, by Environmental Studies graduate Alex Hawkins, she talks about how out-of-season produce that shoppers see in grocery stores is up to a year old. Tomatoes are picked unripe and are stored into trucks that are, what Hawkins likes to refer to them as, a “fridge on wheels”.…
