English is a topic that many children around the world study. Within an English class, you can learn any number of things ranging from essay formatting to poetry analyzing. This year in English, I have learned about three very important things; debate, essays, and the Hero’s Journey. Debate is defined as a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers, meaning that it takes place in a very professional setting. This was a significant topic for me to learn about because I am an argumentative person by nature, but I am not very adept at explaining my reasons for disagreeing. I hadn’t even heard about this before English II, and I never deliberately analyzed the pattern that every “super-hero” movie seemed to follow, though it was obvious to me. I have a very analytical mind, so I notice small details such as the good guys always having to fight something/someone that they can’t seem to defeat, or the fact that every main protagonist has someone who helps them through hardships, but I never put much more thought into it besides just noticing these thing. I didn’t realize that there was an entire format for writing hero stories, and I’m an author! I am very thankful now, though, that I did learn about the Hero’s Journey, because it has helped me in a multitude of ways. I’m now able to understand why many of my favorite books don’t go exactly as one would expect, or why I have to switch between genres after reading a few books of the same category in a row. These things aren’t because the author didn’t notice how it could’ve ended, or because I am tired of the entire genre that I’ve been reading from, but they are because the story wouldn’t be right if it didn’t go how the author wrote it, or because the books are very similar due to the fact that they follow the same format. Without paying attention to these small details, I would not have been able to fix my first book, or to understand many of the books that I
