Shortly after meeting with him, the two became fairly acquainted and would often spend time with each other. A few women thought their unmarried meetings were “a disgrace to the town and a bad example to the young people.” Although a few felt this way, most others were intrigued by their time together and thought he and Emily were in love. Some knew that the very idea was silly, considering the fact that Mr. Barron made it clear he was interested in men rather than women. Many ignored the fact and even went as far as to believe she and Homer got married, especially after one admitted that they “learned that she had bought a complete outfit of men's clothing.” What they didn’t realize, however, is that Homer Barron and Emily were not romantically affiliated. He rejected her, and declined her marriage proposal. Filled with distraught and the lack of reason to take no for an answer, Emily called in a local druggist. Making up lies, Emily quickly told the woman she needed arsenic to kill some pestering rats in her home. Finding the situation sketchy, the druggist didn’t wish to comply, but knew she had no way to convince Emily otherwise. After a long conversation, the druggist went with the lies and gave Emily the drug. Everybody believed Emily truly got the poison out of self remorse would often whisper amongst themselves, “She will kill herself.” What they didn’t realize was Emily didn’t try to kill herself, but Mr. Barron
