The term ecotourism was first used in 1965 by Claus-Dieter Hetzer, an academic and adventurer who first ran “ecotours” in Yucatán, Mexico. The term then began to be redefined and studied in the early 1980’s and was popularized by Hector Ceballos-Lascurain, founding president of the Mexican Association for the Conservation of Nature. Hector was lobbying for the preservation of the wetlands in the northern Yucatán as breeding and feeding habitats of the Phoenicopterus ruber, the American Flamingo. Hector was certain that the growing number of tourists, particularly from the United States, that came to watch the flamingos, could play an important role in improving the local rural economy, creating new jobs and preserving the environment.
Tourism is one of the fastest growing and largest industries in the world and has become an important aspect of globalization, growing annually by 10–15% worldwide (Miller, 2007). Globalization is a phenomenon influenced by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, propelled by the internet, popular culture, and international travel. Diffusion is the spread of cultural traits, both material and non-material from one society to another. It has a profound impact on peoples of the world and the environments in which they live, bringing change in the form of hegemony, the social, cultural, ideological, or economic influence exerted by a dominant group.
