What Is Diversity?

When students attend a university, their values should be sculpted as they are challenged by their professors and as they analyze the community around them. Columbia is known for having intelligent professors who regularly question and dispute political views. As a future political science major, I thoroughly enjoy learning and debating controversial topics. These discussions will put me outside of my comfort zone as I face differing opinions, but at the same time the exchange will help me shape my beliefs. Along with the professors, Columbia's diversity will mold my opinions. People tend to stay in a familiar environment, perhaps sticking with peers of the same race and religion. Although this helps them keep in touch with their culture, students must also explore outside of their comfort zone in order to experience the world around them. Consequently, I intend to learn about different cultures and how to interact with them; the more that we interact with people that are different, the further our mind is exposed to nontraditional ideas. Diversity is the key to understanding America as more immigrants are coming in. I will not just be trying to become friends with other Asian girls; instead, I aim to engage myself in other cultures and in addition help others understand my own background. I truly desire to further mature into an intellectual who can communicate my views with those of other cultures and opinions, and I know that Columbia is the best university that will help me develop further into a distinguishable and educated
