Distracted driving is a natural tendency that indicates the advancement of technology, but also a behavioral shift in humans. Even before technology, drivers have been managing with natural and psychological distractions. Some examples include eating a snack or reading a map. With the increasing popularity of cellphones and texting, the list of interference between the eyes and the road continues to grow. Obviously the main source of debate and concern is how safe the use of these portable devices can be to the driver and everything in their path. However, Rob Reynolds, executive director of FocusDriven, an organization whose central goal is to prevent injuries and death by eliminating cell phone use, argues that implementation of technology in vehicles is not any more helpful than regular use from a portable device. “Impairment is impairment, whether it’s temporary or constant…We can only reduce distracted-driving crash rates by banning the activity – not by trying to enhance the experience” (Barnet). Reynolds suggests that the only solution is ban cell phones entirely and that the built-in technology is more convenient, but proves no safer. However, it all comes down to the overall design of the product. The screen on a portable device was never designed for use while driving. All of us can agree to that it shouldn’t be because it promotes a less safe environment. The built-in devices is designed to be easier to read and less distracting. The technology is more practical and easier to use. The main objective of this is to promote the consumer’s needs by new technology and suggesting a safer way to communicate. Although the use of built-in communication is not as safe as putting your device away; it reaches out to a larger audience who are not willing to quit cold turkey, but are willing to take the safer route by using the car’s designed
