Teddy Farquar, in “No Witchcraft for Sale” by Doris Lessing demonstrates disrespectfulness. To be disrespectful is to be impolite to others. This is a powerful trait to have because it can affect people's lives negatively. Being disrespectful may make a person not have as many friends, and it allows them to be disrespected back by others. In Teddy’s cultural time, there is distinction between white people and people of color. Teddy is a young boy, who lives with his parents on a farm where they have many servants who are of color. One of their servants is Gideon, who Teddy has become close with as a child. When Teddy was young he realized the social distinction between people like him, who are white, and people like Gideon’s son, who is black,

No place, person, or community has ever escaped the evils in the world, societies that were started with good ideals. Even with strict laws that outlawed all evils, they still seemed to creep their way into the Puritan society. The Puritans tried to create a city upon a hill, but this community is none of the sort, it is a community that is fearful of anything different, blindly faithful, and secretly sinful. Logic can’t reside in the Puritan community because of all the blind faith that goes on in the community, it seems that will do anything even without a reason. In Mary Rowlandson 's Narrative of Captivity after sitting in a tent watching the light as it drains from of her baby 's eyes, she “[thinks] of the wonderful goodness of God to…

Of the three stories written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, I least enjoyed The Birthmark. This story is a dark romantic short-story that takes place in the main character’s laboratory, in the late 1700s. The reason that I enjoyed this story the least, is due to its -in my opinion- less meaningful and powerful overall message. That being said, I still thoroughly enjoyed The Birthmark, owing to the superb and powerful imagery employed by Hawthorne, in his writing. Vital to the plot of this story, is its time period.…

Everyone has a side they don’t like anyone else to see, a side that’s not very likeable by others, so it’s hidden. “Young Goodman Brown”, shows that everyone has the potential for evil within. “Young Goodman Brown” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a short story that uses ambiguous symbolism and provocative imagery to reveal the dark side all people have within. Young Goodman Brown, never thought for a second that anyone he knew had an evil, or dark side. He always thought of his wife as a “blessed angel on earth” that will get him to heaven through her kindness and passion towards what she loved most, “God”.…

For example, his cruelty against Huck functions as the perfect tool to exhibit the irrational idea that a person who “always whale [his son] when he was sober” (Twain 14) is considered better that a person of color. Twain continues his social argument through Pap’s racist speech, where Pap describes a black person able to vote as a “prowling, thieving, infernal…nigger”(Twain 28). These accusations only make Twain’s arguments more valid. He shows how the black man has everything a country could want in a citizen (Twain 28), but even then the country favors people as low as Pap.…

Several NFL players or teams took a knee, in-bolted arms, or raised their clenched hands amid the national anthem of devotion, on the field during the past football games. A problem over the decades that will never be gone is racial tension. From the earliest of times, we have had slavery and throughout writing we have had the views of slavery writers. Each literary movement brought more and more views of the perspective of an African-Americans life. Then, we had African-Americans capturing in their owns words how they viewed white people; how they portray each other in their own ways. The mid 1800’s -1900’s was a time of slavery, even though there was a change in segregation, racial views were still the same.…

For over 6,000 years, people have been criticizing others based on rumors heard or first hand experience. Many criticisms lead to persecution and ignorance from everyone involved in the situation. Similar to criticisms in modern society, judgments have lead to several persecutions and realizations in literature such as The Crucible and my personal life as well. People should judge others by their inner character, because when they do it brings out compassion; however, when people do not judge by inner character it brings outs qualities such as confusion and insecurity. Last February my friend Bethany showed compassion to her friend Peyton by bringing her to church and changing her life.…
