This topic is one I take incredibly serious because it had directly impacted my life; when I was around ten years old, my father took his life. So, when people do not believe emotional disorders, I take it personally because if they were not real then copious amounts of families would not be affected. In the past, people suffering from these problems were thrown in a mental institution away from contact with other people, but now there are various steps to go through before a psychiatric ward is necessary. Putting people who already feel different in a locked room all day can force anyone to end up mad, so I do not believe this is a logical solution to mental illness. I was shocked to hear that people also receive unfair treatment from health care providers for reasons they cannot control. According to the Encyclopedia of Mental Health, people with mental illness are less likely to benefit than others from the depth and breadth of the health care system. They looked at the mortality rates of the elderly, over the course of 17 years and found that people with mental illness, died an average of 82 years younger than those of the general population. In addition, they found that the health care system also didn’t check left ventricular systolic function as often as other heart failure patients. It is troublesome to believe something so common, causes doctors and employers to question themselves on whether they are making a correct
