To demonstrate, critic David Vanderwerken acknowledges that the most powerful of these inversions is the reversal of the relationship between father and son. According to Vanderwerken, the father will help the son make the transition from “dependence to independence” but in Night the “...roles are completely reversed; the son becomes the parent” (Vanderwerken 64). This transposal becomes extremely apparent upon Wiesel and his father’s arrival at Buchenwald. It is there that his father, already frail, completely breaks down; he speaks feverishly of things that never happened and relies more and more heavily on his son as a provider. An example of this would be when Wiesel discovers his father in his bed, crying that his neighbors were beating…
Rhetorical Analysis: Exploring Devices that Forge Connections between Unity and Cultures Published in 1996, James McBride reflects back on the lives of himself and his mother growing up in the Bronx, and the vast number of experiences that shaped both their lives. McBride poignantly reflects on the differences that unified his family, allowing McBride to successfully intertwine the two cultures as one by highlighting the differences between the two, and bringing the two together to convey that the two cultures are truly one, in the way his mother did for him. In order to promote the central theme of unity through faith in the color of water, author James McBride utilizes symbolism and juxtaposition to show the striking similarities between the cultures, despite the perceived stigmas that marred James and his mother’s childhood.…
Often in this paper I will be referring to a discourse community, and at first it would seem like you are not a part of one. Nevertheless, sports teams, book clubs, even just having a job puts you in a discourse community. John Swales, a professor of linguistics, defines discourse communities as having certain criteria. He states that they have an agreed set of public goals, they have mechanisms of intercommunication, and they have a specific lexis. I am currently in my second year here at Western Illinois, and I am majoring in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration.…
A homogeneous discourse norm is a strong tool that can facilitate the process of globalization tremendously. With a mutual understanding about how one should communicate with others, people from distant parts of this world could exchange ideas and opinions without offending or being offended by one another. Airports, hotels and restaurants in the major cities across world are nowadays share the same set of discourse models. People are more comfortable with travelling around the world because the way of conversing, at least for the most part, will not be unexpected or bewildering. According to Cameron, behind the discourse norms there stands the core values and cultural norms of a society.…
As discussed in the scholarly article When the First Voice You Hear Is Not Your Own by Jacqueline Jones Royster, “cross boundary discourse,” contributes to human problems in society. Royster arranged her article to be clear and concise to her readers and began by stating her main interest for analyzing the problems that she faced and common problems in society as well. As her evidence and reasoning, she structured her article around three personal stories/scenes. She then concludes with advise for her readers to do their job and eliminate the issue of misunderstandings and miscommunications. Royster’s arrangement of the essay, her clear statement of the purpose, and her call to action from her audience forms a strong argument and importance for readers to connect and understand the problem.…
I personally really liked this workshop that we did in class and I think it should be added to the schedule for future assignments. Reading the sample essays as a class and breaking them a part piece by piece made it easier to understand what you are looking for in our Scholarly Rhetorical Analysis. I was able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each paper. But I also heard new opinions from peers that I overlooked when reading it by myself.…

Addressing the complexities articulated within the act of ethnic identity enunciation, the art of writing is granted the power of eliciting a counter discourse. Ethnic identity, be it a heterogeneous construct fashioned by and through the narrative it sustains, unravels the interplay between competing discourses of power .To transcend the boundaries of marginality infused in the supremacy given to certain languages over others, voicing minorities plight of exclusion can only be maintained through the re- appropriation of their own linguistic medium .In the same way that language creates and determines discourse, identity is re-constructed; it is manifested in the very act of writing and narrating the shared experience of a given…
“A discourse community is a group of people who share similar goals or purposes and use communication to achieve these goals” (Swales 220). Discourse Communities are thought to have six characteristics according to John Swales in his excerpt “The Concept of a Discourse Community.” Swales stated that “These characteristics being the community has a set of common goals known to the public, mechanisms for communication, mechanisms to provide feedback, has one or more genres of communication, an acquired specific lexis, and a level of members with relevant expertise to this content” (Swales 221). “Keys to Success” is the name of a learning community for first year freshmen offered at the University of Memphis. John Bowen ethnography, Muslims through Discourse, takes a deep look at the Islam Religion in the Gayo highlands located in Indonesia. Although he desires to investigate the social structure and history, through his field work he examines the local forms of Islam. Bowen constructs two categories to define the ideologies of Islam represented, which are traditionalist (stemming from rural communities) and modernist (rooted in urban society). Each have distinctive histories that influence and shape their values. Through analyzing the Gayo people’s debates about religious practices, he highlights the importance of religious discourse and language instead of emphasizing Geertz dramaturgical theory.…
In "The Concept of a Discourse Community", John Swales (1990) aimed to define what a discourse community is; then he carefully deconstructs discourse community into six fundamental attributes that are important for recognizing a discourse community. Swales definition of a discourse community is a group that has objectives or purposes, and utilize communication to accomplish those objectives. The six essential characteristics that he claims to be the core of a discourse community are its goals, intercommunication, participation, genres, Lexis, and expertise. Swales made his interpretation of these attributes very clear; he explains that a discourse community has a concurred set of common public goals that all its participants attempt to attain. A discourse community has a mechanism of intercommunication for all its members.…
I have been through some different cultural experiences in my life and recently noticed how discourse plays a significant role in the experiences and how it has created who I am today. A significant experience that I have been dealing with since I was six years old is watching my little brother deal with diabetes. Diabetes is considered to have its own culture because “diabetes has become a habit for the people who deal with it every day, and it is not inherited, but learned” (Kulkami). Diabetes has become a major part of my everyday life when I am dealing with my brother because I have had to learn and adjust my everyday choices just as much as him. Even though I am not the one that has to physically live with the illness, I have to help…
Nearly everyone is part of a discourse community, most of the time, multiple discourse communities. However, the majority of people do not even know what a discourse community is. A discourse community can consist of any of the following including, but not limited to, particular academic fields, religious organizations, and hobby groups. Discourse communities have the power to influence and shape the way many individuals think and behave. The particular discourse community I have chosen to analyze is my sorority, Delta Gamma.…
After reading Gee’s definition of discourses many of us develop our own understanding and definition. For me, James Paul Gee theory is not just about the definition of the elements of discourse but, about certain components that present themselves in our everyday life as well in our community. In his introduction “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics”, Gee brings various aspects to my attention, such as the nine ways that are associated with identity. To start with, he quotes identity as to “say something, do something, and are something.”. In other words that when we speak we design for a reason and with a purpose.…
