What Is Deception In Much Ado About Nothing

What is deception? Deception is “the act of making someone believe something that is not true.” Deception is a common subject for writers, and one example of deception is in the play, Much ado about Nothing, by the greatest writer of the English Language, Sir William Shakespeare. This play is about the antagonist (Don John) tricking a noble soldier, Claudio. His friends eventually uncover Don John’s plans and he is brought to justice. Deception is divided into classes, class one; lying to protect others, class two; lying in the interest of the liar, and class three; lying to cause harm. Don John’s lie is an example of a class three type of lie because if the protagonists hadn’t discovered the plan, then Claudio’s life would have been ruined. Don John tricks Claudio, his brother; the Prince of Aragon’s right-hand man into believing that Hero, his wife-to-be, is a whore, thus creating a false impression and nearly destroying someone; the definition of a class three liar. Don John’s evil and nefarious plan can be compared with some present-day examples, such as those of the notorious Adolf Hitler. Like Don John, Hitler’s plan is credited with harming people in a significant way, causing them to be a class three liar.
