Besides the average textbook and workbook combination, other components on learning can also come from different sources provided by the internet. In doing research there are over a million programs that can serve as a learning tool. Starting roughly around two years of age, a child or even adult can gain knowledge on education from the computer screen. The most popular computer assisted learning component is Hooked on Phonics. In 1987, this educational tool originated from a father eager to help his son who was struggling on reading. Not knowing that the at-home learning program would reach recognition twenty-five years later and become successful but this program added more subjects besides reading and made it easier for children to learn. In 2001, Hooked on Phonics launched a Hooked on School Success program in which helped children excel in school with a comprehensive learning approach to essential reading skills, study habits, and test-taking strategies. Learn to Read was named “One of the Top 100 Classroom Products” by Curriculum Administrator magazine and Hooked on Phonics partnered with KinderCare offering tutoring programs in KinderCare daycare centers across the nation. Standardized Testing, known as SOL’s, has been around since the mid-1800s but it was not until the 2000s where they took off in a different direction. In the third grade, teachers introduce this testing and it is made so that if the student does not pass with a certain score they either have to go to summer school and test over or get held back because they have not mastered the skill. After the completion of fifth grade and entering into middle school, the opportunity of getting tested to be a gifted student is available. The student is able to showcase their skills on what they have previously learned and what areas they are strong in, to even being able to skip a grade, if applicable. Back then, Standardized Testing helped and prepared students for college such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SATs) and American College Test (ACTs).
