What is Community Life? “Community life. I use this phrase to capture the odd combination of volunteerism, widespread charitable giving, and engagement in the community that was at the heart of American exceptionalism in the nineteenth century” (Murray 2013, 26). From the time that America was founded, the early settlers were already starting to develop the foundation for American exceptionalism. They realized that to make the area their own, they were going to have to work together.

The people of America stand behind their beliefs and are constantly fighting for change. The difference today is that we are divided. “From guns to gay marriage and from voting to subsidized health care coverage, individual states are becoming defiantly separate in their respective approaches to social and fiscal policy.” (Milligan 2014) The country is working against itself. American still have a great sense of community though. Examples of this can be seen in situations such as Ferguson, the fight for rights with the LGBT community and racism. The people of American still come together even if it leads to a divide. Americans are taking what makes them great, community life, and making it a factor that tears the country
