What Is Columbus A Hero

Columbus is often thought of as a heroic explorer who discovered the new world. But in my opinion he is everything but that. In an article about changing the name of columbus day it says “american indian people have been on this continent for 10,000 years, and scientists have proven numerous other explorer were here first”(petition to abolish columbus day). Columbus was said to have discovered the new world. But this proves that in fact, it wasn't him who discovered this land. In a picture painted of the landing of columbus, it shows columbus leading a group with sword in hand while indians cowered in the background. This picture portrays him as a hero but when you look closely, you realise that he is invading on the indians land and they

Even if Columbus had not sailed to the Americas, it would not make much difference as he was not the only person interested in explorations and expeditions. Much Europeans were focused in exploring and the only difference would be that the Natives wouldn’t have gone through such kind of brutality and cruelty conducted by Columbus. People aren’t much aware about the myth of Christopher Columbus and they still believe that he discovered America. But it’s a completely false fact and he can clearly be considered to be a villain as he has been gaining honor for something that he never did and also conducted genocide of the Native American people. Therefore, he is clearly a…

Christopher Columbus was morally incompetent, greedy, and cruel according to Howard Zinn. In A People’s History of the United States Zinn makes it clear that Columbus was never a hero and should not be credited as such. Columbus’ only intention was to go on a voyage for purely monetary reasons and he never had benevolent intentions. On top of this, Colombus and his men extorted, imprisoned, and abused countless Indians in the Americas. Zinn is attempting to shed light on the fact that Columbus is not a hero and should not be portrayed as one.…

The Disney movie Pocahontas offers the viewer a stark portrayal of how Englishmen viewed Indigenous American tribes upon their arrival to the United States. The movie features a song titled Savages where Pocahontas and her fellow Powhatan tribespeople are described by the English settlers as “barely even human” and “dirty shrieking devils”. In reality, the first European explorers had much more diverse accounts of their experiences with indigenous peoples in North and Central America. To accurately evaluate early settlers interactions with American tribespeople, the works of Christopher Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, and John Smith will be examined. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who landed in the Caribbean islands after a two month…

Both of them had good points. However I agree with Zinn's perspective more than Schlesinger perspective of Christopher Columbus. While many have depicted Columbus as a benevolent explorer who discovered the New World, he wasn't particularly kind, and some think he didn't discover the New World. We now have evidence of many explorers that had reached the Americas before him. Also, he only visited islands near North America. Therefore he never made it to North America. When Columbus landed in 1492, it is estimated there were between 10 and 15 million indigenous people in the area that now constitutes the United States.…

From the perspective of native peoples, Columbus was certainly portrayed as a villain. He capitalized on native people for resource and labour, and many died as a result of mere brutality and diseases introduced by Europeans (Britannica). A new force of violence and subjugation began upon Columbus’ arrival. However, even if he took a less aggressive approach to the Taino people, it would not have changed the end result of the natives. The majority of the Taino people were decimated by diseases that they had never encountered before and they did not have the immune systems to fight off these diseases.…

It's hard to not be on the side that criticizes Columbus when almost all of his actions and crimes against the natives were in contradiction to his praises. It states that the primary purpose of Europeans in the New World was to bring the divine truth of Jesus Christ to the natives. It goes on to say that Columbus was praised for being a devout Christian who moved to liberate the Holy land from Islamic rule. However, at what cost was the divine truth brought to the New World? Wasn't his own mission to free the Holy land the same tyranny he was introducing to the people of this new land?…

The only piece of history in his favor is the fact that he accidentally discovered America, which could be disproved in the next few years considering all of the extensive research being conducted to find another discoverer of America. His great accomplishment was the destruction of an entire population. How is that heroic? So the next time Columbus Day is celebrated, consider yourself educated and spread the word on how Christopher Columbus was everything but a hero. This will in hope eventually bring an end to the celebration of a man who is quite contradictory to what America stands…
