What Is Cognitive Dissonance?

Decent Essays
1. From my understanding, cognitive dissonance refers to when holds two conflicting values or when ones attitude does not align with their behavior. When I began this job at the car dealership, I signed a non-compete agreement. I consider myself to be an honest person. I believe that one should honor their contract and when working for a company, and they should be committed to doing their job to the best of their ability. However, on the weekend, I work for a small "mom and pop" rental company. This directly goes against my belief that employees should be loyal to the company that their work for and honor their word.

2. Although I know that this is wrong and may even get me in trouble legally, I have convinced myself that it is worth it.

In “Varicella Vaccination Program Success” by Steven Novella, the author argues about the people who does not believe in vaccines and how are their arguments formulated. They ignore all the information and statitistics and focus on the smaller problems caused in the investigation, to assure that vaccines are not effective and riskful. However, besides all this, the author states at the end that we should follow more closely the vaccines programs and know that they are useful with the proper regulations. Moreover, Novella starts the article talking about the cognitive dissonance, which is “the state of mind that results when conflict arises between perceived reality and the cherished or learned facts, values, and beliefs regarding that reality.”,…

With this paper I will answer some ethical questions related to the Finer Bags company. They are a corporation who sell replica designer bags at significantly reduced prices- much to the chagrin of the high fashion design companies who have invested heavily in the design and marketing processes. Finer Bags does describe itself as a ”replica” producer; however once the bags leave their custody many are packaged and re-sold as originals which creates a corporate cultural dissonance (Brusseau, 2012), which many critics say they do nothing to protect consumers from- they are after all counterfeiters themselves. 1. Would you call honesty part of the corporate culture at Finer Bags?…

The two theories could be benefit from being used together because it allows for a clear description to the reason why people want to reduce discomfort. Cognitive Dissonance would benefit from the five different elements that make up Dramatism. This is because if Cognitive Dissonance was to adapt these elements it would not be able to just see the amount of discomfort that an individual is feeling but would be able to analyze it as a result. Festinger could also bring Burke’s key term of guilt to identify why someone may be feeling the discomfort in the beginning. This is because a person could possibly have guilt which causes their discomfort.…

Alleviating Cognitive Dissonance In the chapter “Quieting the Mind” of the book, Opening Skinner’s Box, author Lauren Slater examines the theory of cognitive dissonance. Leon Festinger, a psychologist at the University of Minnesota, originally introduced the theory of cognitive dissonance to psychology in 1957. The basic way of thinking about cognitive dissonance is that it refers to a situation when two or more cognitive elements (such as behaviors and attitudes/ beliefs) are inconsistent, causing psychological stress and discomfort. Festinger tested his theory by constructing several experiments to observe if participants changed their beliefs to be congruent with their behaviors.…

Higher education emphasizes higher order thinking skills (Bostock, n.d.), in particular in relation to specific disciplines, but also serves to build effective citizenship skills (Chan et al, n.d.). Merriam Webster (n.d.) defines idea as: “a thought, plan, or suggestion about what to do; an opinion or belief; (or) something that you imagine or picture in your mind”. The appropriate context is that this is an academic environment, and that such environments demand academic rigor. Academic rigor entails encouraging assumptions and beliefs to be constructively questioned, and critical thinking rather than just “regurgitation” (Great Schools Partnership, 2014).…

Application of the Social Cognitive Theory on Child Obesity The social cognitive theory (SCT) developed by Albert Bandura emphasizes how cognitive, behavioral, personal, and environmental factors interact to determine motivation and behavior (Crothers, Hughes, & Morine, 2008). The SCT is composed of four methods of goal realization: self-observation, self-evaluation, self-reaction and self-efficacy (Crothers, Hughes, & Morine, 2008). These factors are constantly influencing each other and used as a framework for designing, implementing and evaluation studies and program (Crothers, Hughes, & Morine, 2008).…

According to Frantz Fanon, cognitive dissonance occurs when “people hold a core belief that is very strong [and] when they are presented with evidence that works against that belief, the new evidence cannot be accepted [so] they will rationalize, ignore or even deny anything that doesn’t fit with that core belief” (Fanon 1952). In Anthropology and Egalitarianism: Ethnographic Encounters from Monticello to the Guinea-Bissau, Eric Gable explains a core belief held by Jefferson in which “the negro” had an “absolute and unbridgeable inferiority” while Indians were the equals of white people in intelligence and morals. Jefferson went to great lengths to reinforce his belief in the biological inferiority of black people to white people (Gable 2011).…
