Director Pete Docter brings Pixar back to life with the animated film Inside Out. The beloved animation studio has returned to the pinnacle of adult and child entertainment established in the late-2000s with films like Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, and Toy Story 3. How fitting, then, that this picture—set predominantly inside the mind of an 11-year-old only child named Riley who’s forced to move with her parents to San Francisco from her hometown in Minnesota—features five emotions as its main characters: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust. Character development with each character is vital to the understanding and glimpse of the spectacular world of psychology and giving a simple aspect and peek into our own imagination.…
Disney Pixar has a funny way of captivating their audiences and eliciting emotional responses. So, it’s not surprising they are able to do this effectively with a movie about emotions. Inside Out is an excellent example of a universal film, because it has a wealth of information to share with any field, especially marketing and consumer behaviors. These are some of the observations I blogged in class while watching the film: • Once the perception of the broccoli is changed from gross to enticing (via the classic parent "airplane" trick) Riley's emotions are more willing to allow the food into her system.…
The Cognitive Perspective is considered to be a relatively new or modern approach in the field of psychology in regards to the study human behavior that started gaining attention around the late 1950s leading to what is also known as the “Cognitive Revolution” during which the definition of psychology started to deviate from the inclination to be classified as a study of behaviour given that pre-1950s, psychology was deemed as the study of behaviour by experimental psychologists who were influenced by the work of psychologists going along the lines of Pavlov’s work which emphasized on behaviorism arguing that the most objectively observable evidence is that which can be seen externally i.e., behavioral (Miller, 2003) The cognitive perspective allowed researches to come up with conclusions regarding the characteristics of cognitive processes through the observation of certain behaviours in terms of consistency in behaviour, measurable by the rate of forgetting and reaction. The major emphasis of the cognitive perspective leans towards the study of cognitive function as the name suggests or in other words, the study of mental processes inclusive of but not limited to; attention, memory, language, perception and thinking. (McLeod, S. A. 2008)…
Memory The movie Inside Out touches on many parts of psychology and different types of memory. Lots of senses during Inside Out show characteristics and demonstrates how a person’s memory works. Short term memory is “memory that holds information briefly before it is either stored in long term memory or be forgotten. (Rathus,2010) When you remember something for a short amount of time it is called iconic memory.…
It is with great consideration and enthusiasm that I am applying to the Doctorate of Behavioral Health program for the Fall 2018 semester. In my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to learn about the vast mental health issues that plague the individuals within our communities by obtaining my bachelor degree in psychology. From there, I completed my master’s degree in social work as a member of Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society. After earning my master’s degree from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, I worked for four years in multiple physical health clinics and inpatient psychiatric facilities with both doctors and mid-level providers as a licensed clinical social worker. It was during this time that I discerned the…
In Inside Out, Riley’s memories are stored as orbs, stored in a limitless library, organized into different categories. This library is a simpliar way of referring the hippocampus. The movie doesn’t touch much on this, but each memory is sorted and put into alike divisions so they are easy to recall. Each memory has an emotion tied to it, which the movie emphaizes. Riley has Joy, Fear, Disgust, Anger, or Sadness connected to a memory.…
The Cognitive Theory is the examination of one’s thought process. The thought process incorporates how someone views the world. Human behavior was seen though positive and negative directions in this experiment. Factors that may have contributed to these actions may be found in personality traits, genetics and personal morals. For example, #2093 obeyed rules except when it came to profanity he refused to participant due to morals.…
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions. Wilhelm Wundt first began research for psychology psychologists have developed from around the world to bring us five main perspectives of psychology, known as, the five schools of thought. The five schools of thought help people to understand why people do certain motions, how people interact with each other, where we develop our mannerisms, and to have a deeper understanding of the human mind, through: biological, psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive and humanistic perspectives. Biological psychology is the study of the physiological bases of behavior, which follows “the relationship between psychological processes and the underlying psychological events” (Britannica,…
The behavioral, humanistic, and cognitive perspectives each have vastly different views and theories. Each one analyzes and tackles psychological disorders in it’s own unique way. For example, there is the case of Jake. Jake is a student who has recently been diagnosed with anxiety disorder after starting harder classes for his major. Each perspective has different views on the origins of his anxiety and how to treat it.…
Human nature and abnormal behavior are defined very differently by the several counseling theories. One could say that two of the most contradictory theories are: Psychodynamic (PD) versus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Both of them attempt to relieve clients of emotional distress, however, the underlying reasons of why the distress occurs, and how the counselor helps the client relieve it, differs highly between the two theories. One of the first and most revolutionary theories in the history of psychology was the Psychodynamic theory. Even though it was originally funded by Freud, many of his students and followers imparted their own theories (e.g Jung, Erikson.)…
In the movie Inside Out, the main concept that is portrayed is how memory works. Certain specific topics that relate to memory that are in the movie include REM sleep, long term memory, dream theories, flashbulb memories and interference, to name a few. The way that some of these topics are portrayed in the movie are correct, and actually give an accurate, but comedic interpretation of how the memory works. Although the movie has some moments where concepts that involve memory are not necessarily correct, overall it gives a relatively accurate display of how information is processed in people’s minds. To start, the movie mainly focuses on short-term memory, long-term memory, and R.E.M. Sleep, and the way they are portrayed is close to how the…
Inside Out is a film that is about one main character, Riley. The film shows us how from the time of Riley’s birth until eleven years of age, how her emotions change as the older she gets. The first emotion that Riley is born with is Joy. Joy is always happy, and looks to the brighter side of anything negative. Next came sadness.…
I decided to take a different approach to my critical film review. “Inside Out” is a recently new film that does not actually have an identified therapist or client. However, the main themes of the movie have many parallels to the content that we have been learning in class. “Inside Out” is a Disney Pixar movie that brings to life the five emotions (Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear, and Sadness) of 11-year-old Riley. Life is seemingly going smoothly for Riley and her emotions.…
In this paper I will describe and contrast two of the major theories in psychology, the Psychoanalytical Theory and the Cognitive Theory. I personally believe that an integration between them would best suit my future approach to counseling. Therefore I will present the main theoretical concepts and psychotherapeutic techniques, and their differences and similarities in order to understand to what extent they can be integrated. Sigmund Freud, the founder and major exponent of Psychoanalytical Theory firmly believed that that experiences in childhood play a crucial part in development and personality, influencing adult functioning. He expressed that a person is driven by urges that emanate from the unconscious, leading them to repeat patterns…
Within a cognitive behavioral framework, emotions are viewed as a consequence of cognitive change, where the etiological significance of emotions has largely been lowered to a secondary status (Courbasson, Nishikawa & Shapira, 2011). Cognitive behavior therapy has the distinct advantage of helping clients to develop coping skills deemed useful for the present and future. As such, substance abuse clients through cognitive behavioral therapy can practice new coping skills taught and rehearse ways for avoiding or dealing with social situations that could potentially initiate a relapse. Criticism of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Cognitive behavioral therapy has been criticized for downplaying emotions, failure to focus on the role of the unconscious…
