Transgender Issues In The Caitlyn Jenner Hysteria

Transgender Issues
In light of all the Caitlyn Jenner hysteria, I presumed it would be useful to touch on the barbaric manner people in the transgender community are treated. It appears as if many anti-transgender people are becoming more against the “unnatural” process of becoming a different sex than the one that was assigned at birth. God arguments are completely invalid on this subject, however. Not to burst the bubble of any conservatives out there, but if you find that the mere fact that someone transgender is gross your opinion does not deserve value or respect, and I’ll get there later. Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, admitted to always feeling as if being a man made her feel unhappy, explaining her brain is “much more female than male.” Recently, a Vanity Fair cover featured Caitlyn Jenner, with the caption “Call me Caitlyn.” This could be viewed as a step toward more transgender acceptance, which is a foreign concept in modern-day America. With the support for Jenner seeming almost overwhelming, even

Before their transition, they lived a hopeless life filled with secrets, lies, and unhappiness, but life is not heaven after their transition. These people are still people, no matter what they choose to identify themselves as, yet they are treated as if they are aliens without emotions or feelings. Eighty-three percent of male to female transgender women report facing verbal for their gender identity/presentation, while 85% of female to male transgender men report it as well. They face abuse much more often than gender binary people, with a staggering 30-37% reporting physical abuse, and 46-57% reporting discrimination when they attempt to get a job. No matter the opinion on transgender people, it is wrong that anyone faces such treatment. All persons in this world deserve food, a roof over their head, and a job, as long as they do not harm

Gay love has been an issue for the longest now and it’s beginning to get out of hand. But that’s not the only thing that’s getting out of hand, what also is getting out of hand is societies view on those who are transgender. Which brought to my attention that some people are so reluctant to change that they resort violence and brute force in order to shape things into their image whenever something that they say is wrong starts to occur. They are only interested and care about what they want to see is “right” day to day. The way we approach people who are gay or transgender is outright ridiculous and ignorant which can easily be added to the millions of other situations where ignorance has occurred in history. Who’s to say that they aren’t people just like me and you? Does being gay or transgender make you any better than someone who’s straight and hasn’t altered their sex? Let me answer it…

Imagine a world where your gender defines who you are and who exactly you could become. Stereotypes about gender could be as simple as a person born male would become a construction worker or police officer and a person born female would become a school teacher or hair dresser. People are to fit into their gender stereotypes, and that was that. But, it is not the 1950s anymore. It is 2016, and in today’s world, gender is but a place on your lower body. People can identify as the opposite gender than they were born with, or identify as both genders, and even identify as no gender at all. It has become a personal issue that is not yet fully accepted into society. If someone finds out you are a transgender, they have the right to refuse service to you or kick you out, no questions asked. Transgender people are treated differently because of how they identify themselves. Grouped together with LGBT: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, the group as a whole has had to deal with riots against them, social media threats against them, and prejudice following them everywhere from shopping malls to even the public restroom.…

To be transgender means to be the opposite of the predictable notions of being male or female. People coming out as transgender is something that is beginning to be more common in society today. Currently, transgender people face discrimination or even bullying in school. Most citizens who are transgender are confronted with poverty because employers avoid hiring those who are transgender. Transgender students face bullying in school and often attempt to commit suicide. Such violence is driven by many reasons, including religion and individuals ' personal reasons, but these subjects are outside the focus of this paper. This papers ' main focus is the types of social disparities and inequalities, including intentional violence, and their effects on transgender individuals. For example, one of the main types of intentional violence that transgender individuals face, is hate acts. According to the article, "Transgender and Transsexual Identities: The Next Strange Fruit..." transgender individuals face hate crimes mainly in social settings. Some of the many hate crimes noted in the article, are verbal abuse, being mugged, being threatened, physical abuse, and even extreme violence such as rape and murder. The article also includes specific examples of intentional violence, including a situation where a transgender individual was told in public that they should be killed for being transgender (Kidd & Witten, 2007). Many people would argue that these acts are not any different from any other intentional violent crimes, that non transgender individuals face; which is true to an extent point. Non transgender individuals do also experience such violent acts, but there is a specific social disparity between their situation and a transgender individual put…

Many of us are out of touch with our fellow citizen's hardships and do not acknowledge the lack of opportunity that exists for some of the least privileged members of our communities and fails to recognize the great adversity they face. There should be more federal anti-discrimination laws to protect the civil rights of all transgender people especially in public settings such as schools, athletics, and employment. Today many young transgender men and women face debilitating discrimination on a daily basis at all levels and sectors of life. For many of them, the disparaging and hateful discrimination can start at a young age in school and haunt them into their adulthood when seeking employment even when they are just as or more qualified as…

They often face discrimination and have higher rates of poverty. On the other hand, around the world, culture dictates, at a very young age, how boys and girls are supposed to act, feel and respond to certain situations. The history of transgender people is widespread and fascinating. Over the millennia the transgendered and transsexual individuals were considered magical, had close relationships with the gods they worshipped, and thought of as having extraordinary power. During the last 200 years, western culture condemned them of being immoral. However, in the 21st century, they are recognized as normal people with their own identities. Overall, the transgender community endured oppression in countless forms, in modern times, and throughout history. While transgender oppression can be seen during the development throughout history, in childhood and adolescence, in our society and other cultures, and transgender lives in the media, it is evident that the transgender community has a place in the history of nearly every culture on our planet. The transgender community is oppressed in many ways. Nevertheless, as our society continues to evolve, our opinions towards the transgender community will change for the…

In recent years, the LGBT movement has gained steam and successfully fought for the rights of gays and lesbians. Gays and lesbians enjoy more social acceptance than they did 20 years ago. This social acceptance, however, is not enjoyed by all members of the LGBT community, as transgender and transsexual individuals are still discriminated against with far more vehemence than gays and lesbians. This discrimination is explored in the film Boys Don’t Cry and the novel She’s Not There, by Jennifer Boylan. Both of these works portray the difficulties that transgender and transsexual people face on a daily basis. Through the stories of Brandon and Jennifer, one can see that the social attitudes and stigmas toward the transgendered has not changed…

In 2002 author Emelia Lombardi, organized a study of 402 transgender and gender non-conforming people. Their data revealed that over half had suffered through harassment or violence. Illustrating that violence among them is a prevalent issue within the United States. Although explanations behind using violence differ among individuals, some articles entail reasons as to why this type of hate is common. In August 2009, authors Kristen Schilt and Laurel Westbrook, studied the relationships among cisgender and transgender people. They noticed that cisgender men who responded with violence after being romantically or sexually involved with transgender women justified their behavior by claiming they felt feminized or tricked. Since aggression is believed to be a masculine trait, their reaction was a way to regain their masculinity and heterosexuality. In other words, they wanted to regain their masculinity through violence because to them, being with a transgender woman meant they were loosing their identity as men and becoming gay. This problematic opinion supports the notion that lack of knowledge concerning gender identity leads to intolerance. Now that I’ve spoken about the problem, I will be addressing a few…

Testa et al. (2012) studied transgender women and men in Virginia who experienced physical and sexual violence. The participants in this study varied based on race, ethnicity, age, education level, and socioeconomic status despite being from one state in the U.S. The findings of this study indicate that, in most cases, physical and sexual violence that was experienced in the past was caused by gender identity or expression of the transgender individual (Testa et al., 2012). Also, the violent acts were irregularly reported to police. Based on these findings, one can see why the existence of transgender persons in public spaces can be life-threatening and with no help from a social institution that was created to protect and serve. This article suggested that future studies should add the phenomenon of intersecting identities as a dynamic in violence that is experienced by transgender people, which would help in giving a voice to transgender women of…

Transgenders face discrimination in many aspects of society in everyday life, law, and employment. There are many violent encounters faced by transgenders for example, in the past year “102 transgender people were murdered in 12 countries” simply because they were openly transgender (Machlitt). Transgenders also deal with wrongful incarceration; one of the biggest issues is being convicted for “manifesting” prostitution, which is if “somebody in public manifests an internet to commit or solicit an act of prostitution” (Machlitt). Laverne Cox once said that “[the ‘manifesting prostitution’ law] basically means that as a trans women of colour walking in a certain neighborhood, you can be arrested for prostitution.” However, the most prominent issues faced by transgenders is employment, “47 percent of transgender people report they were fired, not advanced, or not hired due to their gender identity” (Machlitt). There is one case where a transgender person was working in a funeral home and was fired for wearing the uniform of the gender she identified with instead of her biological gender. Although, “the court acknowledged that it’s unlawful to discriminate on the basis of gender stereotyping” the defender claimed that because of his religious belief he requires people to remain the sex they were born with; therefore, he should be exempt from the anti-discrimination laws because of the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (Feldman). Transgender people are discriminated against in all levels of society, which in turn causes people to hide who they truly are, this can lead to depression and suicide. Therefore, the government should get involved in protecting its citizen’s lives and natural rights by implementing laws to protect them from such…
