Athletes that consume caffeine are people that especially see and get many of these effects while performing sports and physical action. “Athletes in the Olympic Games were banned from using large doses of caffeine after studies showed that it could cause dangerous health problems that affect their performance” (Price 18). Large doses of caffeine can cause multiple extreme side effects including anxiety, nervousness, stomach pains and vomiting, dehydration, headache, ringing in ears and muscle trembling. This all affects sports and athletic activities greatly. Concentrated caffeine particularly has caused extreme health effects, and destroyed physical appearance and performance entirely. “Every coffee drinker knows that too many cups can give you the jitters, but too much pure caffeine can be fatal within just minutes. One teaspoon of powdered pure caffeine is the equivalent of 25 cups of coffee” (Ebbs). This substance that is produced as a “health supplement” has caused many overdoses and deaths. Some of these includes, athletes Logan Stiner and Wade Sweatt. Other athletes use this powdered caffeine for a better and longer boost for the day on the field. Caffeine already gives people anxiety as a side effect, so people with this disorder will respond differently than others that don’t have this condition. Gender and age are also big factors that result to unpredictable health risks from person to person. "However, caffeine metabolism is slower among infants, pregnant women and individuals with liver disease. In addition, some medications slow caffeine metabolism, which may increase the risk for caffeine intoxication. But the effects of caffeine also vary simply because we're all different." (Whiteman). Besides restlessness, caffeine consumption by infants can lead to long term drug and alcohol use. Pregnant women are impacted more than women not carrying a baby.
