What Is Breaking A Social Norm

Improved Essays
Norms are important rules and expectations set by society. These rules and expectations are expected from society and are a valued standard on how someone should act. Breaking or deviating from social standards are often looked down upon by society (Bobel, et al. 5). The norm I am breaking is treating a baby doll (Alegra) like she is real. My baby’s daddy (my brother) and I are taking Alegra out to eat.. Normally, adults do not pretend that babydolls are real. According to White, life like dolls trouble humans because they are sometimes confused as real babies (6). My hypothesis is that people would not believe this behavior is normal. I believe there will be many different reactions to my experiment including people laughing or just plain …show more content…
Many people at first thought Alegra was real, but when they found out it was a baby doll they were greatly disturbed. Some people asked questions about the baby. The cleaning lady at the restaurant was genuinely nice to us. She came over and offered Alegra a toy (which we accepted). She then asked “what is the baby's name?” I responded “her name is Alegra.” The lady responded “she is cute” and walked away. At some point as we were talking the lady realized Alegra was not real, and she continued to watch us very closely the whole time we were there. The lady seemed disturbed that we were acting as if Alegra were real. Next, an older man sat down near us with his dinner, and he realized almost immediately that Alegra was not real. He became greatly disturbed by this and decided to leave the restaurant after telling the cleaning lady that we were crazy. Next, an older lady came up behind me and whispered in my ear that she knew I was doing this for a social experiment and to keep up the good work. She even came over and said “what a beautiful little girl you have.” Also, there was a teenage girl who came in with her family. Her mother tried to sit across from us in the restaurant, but the teenage girl refused to sit there and asked to sit somewhere else. Every time this girl passed us to refill her drink, she rolled her eyes. It appeared that we were making her very uncomfortable. Also, sitting in the corner near us, were a group of teenage boys who kept on looking over at us. Every time one of the teenage boys passed they gave us a funny look. As the experiment continued and Alegra’s daddy and I were trying to feed Alegra her dinner. One of teenage boys said “stop f***ing trying to feed the baby she’s not real." This teenager seemed very disturbed that we were acting as if Alegra was real. Next, there was a couple who sat down at a table near us. The wife asked us “how old is the baby?” I

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

As a person who is not from the United States, I found the norm that is taken for granted in the United States but that is not normal for some countries. The norm is that people keep right while walking. I guess this is because driving on the right side is provided by a low in the United States. Thus, the deviant behavior that I did is to break the norm of walking the right side. In order to break this norm, I observed my feelings and others’ reactions in two situations of when I and someone pass each other on the stairs ; I walk on the right side, which is normal for people in the United States, and I walk on the left side, which is the behavior that may be able to violate their norm.…

I learned that breaking social norms is frowned upon by society very much. Societal norms are so set when an individual steps outside of those norms he/she is looked at as an outsider who should know better and follow the rules. Some social norms can be broken depending on sanction. For example, church is a formal sanction, there may be members that begin to shout or break out into dance in response to the feeling that overwhelms them from the music or the message that the minister may be preaching as opposed to when a person in a classroom setting he/she cannot just get up and start dancing or yelling across the classroom because the setting is different and the person will be looked as someone who is going against what it's supposed to be…

The Garfinkel experiment As we go about our daily lives, we engage in social norms although we might not stop to think about what they are, the role they play and how it may affect us if it’s broken. Because of this I was given the task to break a social norm and analyze how society responds. This experiment is referred to as the Garfinkel experiment (taking the name of the sociologist who developed it,) whereby social norms (being unwritten rules that are accepted by society and govern the way individuals i.e. society behave,) are broken and the responses analyzed. These rules are expected to be followed, as such when broken you will receive a response of which generally falls into two categories according to Garfinkel: fear and amusement.…
